Job description

Job Summary

The Surveyor performs field surveying tasks to support transportation and civil construction projects. This role collects, records, and verifies survey data, operates surveying instruments, and assists with layout and grade calculations. The Surveyor works under the direction of project supervisors and ensures accurate, well-documented field data for use by office staff and project teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform field surveys using conventional methods and Global Positioning System (GPS) techniques.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate surveying equipment including robotic total stations, GPS receivers, data collectors, and electronic/manual instruments.
  • Collect and record measurements for distances, elevations, angles, and control points; maintain accurate field notes and data logs.
  • Stake and mark points for construction layout, grade control, and drainage features as directed.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans, and construction drawings to execute survey tasks and calculate grade data such as bluetops, slope stakes, drainage structures, retaining walls, and bridge elements.
  • Verify data quality by checking measurements and data files for consistency and accuracy before submission to office staff.
  • Transfer and manage field data using data collectors and computer software; ensure proper file organization and archiving of field records.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment while working on public works and construction sites.
  • Coordinate with project supervisors and other field personnel to complete assigned survey tasks on schedule.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or associate degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering technology, or related field preferred.
  • Experience operating total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors in a field environment.
  • Proficient in reading construction plans and performing basic grade and slope calculations.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field notes and data records.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites.
Preferred Skills
  • Familiarity with robotic total stations and common data collector software.
  • Experience with Topcon software or similar surveying software is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills including data transfer, file management, and use of spreadsheets.
  • Good communication skills for coordinating with supervisors and crew members.
Physical Requirements and Work Conditions
  • Frequent sitting, climbing, bending, stooping, and squatting.
  • Ability to work at heights above 6 feet and lift up to 50 pounds periodically.
  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions and on active construction sites.
  • Must be able to travel to project locations as required.
