What does an online speech instructor do?

An Online Speech Instructor is a professional who teaches students how to improve their speech, communication, and presentation skills through virtual platforms. They may work with individuals or groups, providing instruction on public speaking, pronunciation, accent reduction, and effective verbal communication. Lessons are typically conducted via video calls, using interactive materials and personalized feedback to help students achieve their goals. Online Speech Instructors may work independently or for educational institutions, and they adapt their teaching methods to suit different learning styles and needs.

What does an online speech instructor do?

As an online speech instructor, you lead a virtual classroom over the internet and teach principles of communication, speech, and rhetoric. Your duties include providing academic advising, developing lesson plans, delivering course instruction in an online learning platform, and assessing student performance. At some institutions, you also teach dual credit courses in conjunction with partner high schools. Additionally, your responsibilities require you to participate in campus committees and professional development opportunities. You may have administrative duties as well. Most positions are full-time adjunct or assistant roles, which require 12 to 15 instructional hours per semester and offer benefits.

How do online speech instructors typically structure their lessons to keep students engaged in a virtual environment?

Online Speech Instructors often use a blend of interactive activities, multimedia resources, and real-time feedback to maintain student engagement during virtual sessions. Classes may include live demonstrations, breakout discussions, and personalized exercises tailored to each student's needs. Many instructors incorporate video recordings and self-evaluation tools, encouraging students to practice and track their own progress. Collaboration with students often extends beyond scheduled sessions through discussion boards or email, fostering continuous improvement and support.

To thrive as an Online Speech Instructor, you need a strong background in speech-language pathology, communication sciences, or education, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications like ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) certification. Familiarity with virtual teaching platforms, digital assessment tools, and interactive multimedia resources is essential. Excellent verbal communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and engage remote learners are standout soft skills. These competencies are crucial for delivering effective instruction, fostering student progress, and ensuring successful outcomes in a virtual environment.
