M&J is seeking a Software Engineer. This role is essential to ensure the reliability, performance, and compliance of Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)'s software and operational systems. Candidates will work on designing, developing, and maintaining software applications, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating with engineering and operations teams to provide technical support and implement software solutions.
Responsibilities
โ€ข Develop a data-driven predictive maintenance program in collaboration with ELES staff
โ€ข Create CAD drawings of existing vertical transportation equipment
โ€ข Support ELES in upgrading the in-house remote monitoring systems
โ€ข Provide technical leadership and specialized technical assistance in problem-solving and application systems development
โ€ข Interface with other offices to ensure integration and support of Authority systems
โ€ข Initiate and conduct studies to measure efficiency and effectiveness of current and proposed systems
โ€ข Prepare concise management-level reports on projects and technical issues
โ€ข Perform software engineering tasks including requirements specification, system design, development, quality assurance, documentation, and testing
โ€ข Work with assigned application systems such as elevator and escalator monitoring data concentrators, communications, networks, microprocessors, and track circuit monitoring tools
โ€ข Support ELES website applications, requiring knowledge of HTML
โ€ข Employ software engineering techniques and languages including C, C++, Java, JavaScript, PERL, Object-Oriented design, assembly language, proprietary compiler syntax, relational database programming, Boolean logic, and command language interpreters, as well as off-the-shelf software tools
โ€ข Serve as project engineer for system configuration management, including version control and software change oversight
โ€ข Make recommendations on hardware platforms and preferred programming languages for future development
โ€ข Represent ELES at meetings with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders; review designs for WMATA standards compliance and interoperability; provide feedback and approvals
โ€ข Provide operational guidance, technical advice, and training to Authority staff
โ€ข Ensure high levels of performance and reliability for major application systems
โ€ข Develop, review, and update WMATA standards, criteria, and specifications in alignment with industry practices
โ€ข Prepare technical specifications and task orders for procurement of hardware, software, test equipment, and services
โ€ข Work closely with end users to understand information requirements and resolve problems
โ€ข Maintain service request logs and project work plans; prepare status reports to track progress
โ€ข Advise supervisors on system modifications, deficiencies, user requirements, and recommend improvements
โ€ข Coordinate with WMATA personnel to accomplish assigned tasks
โ€ข Prepare materials lists and action items for task completion
โ€ข Provide draft documents to stakeholders, incorporate comments, and finalize
โ€ข Attend required meetings and perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or physical sciences
โ€ข Minimum of six years of progressively responsible experience in time-critical
process-control computer systems design, development, and maintenance
โ€ข Extensive expertise in software engineering for time-critical control system design, operation, and maintenance
โ€ข Strong project management skills in complex technical environments, including meeting operational requirements, minimizing outages, conserving resources, and ensuring ease of use and maintenance
โ€ข Knowledge of concepts, standards, products, and technical support within assigned areas
โ€ข Ability to independently customize, implement, and maintain assigned systems in both development and production
โ€ข Skills in estimating, scheduling, planning, control, and reporting
โ€ข Ability to manage multiple projects while ensuring system maintenance, monitoring, and tuning are not neglected
โ€ข Ability to maintain current documentation and reporting for assigned systems
โ€ข Strong interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships and provide customer-focused service
โ€ข Strong communication skills to exchange complex technical information and resolve issues quickly
โ€ข Advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or physical sciences
โ€ข Knowledge of two or more of the following: C, C++, Java, JavaScript, Object-Oriented languages, ladder logic programming, assembly language, proprietary microprocessor compiler syntax, relational database programming, Boolean logic, and command languages
