The Role and Why It's Important

At Hy-Vee, our Aisles Online program is all about making grocery shopping as easy and convenient as possible for our customers, and our Pickup Clerks are the final step in delivering on that promise. In this role, you'll be responsible for ensuring online orders are accurately gathered, properly stored, and seamlessly loaded into customers' vehicles for a fast, friendly pickup experience. Your attention to detail and commitment to service make a lasting impression on every customer you help.

What You'll Do

No two shifts are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by greeting every customer warmly and assisting them with their needs throughout the store

  • Gather orders and place them in storage at the proper temperature, then retrieve them promptly prior to the customer's arrival

  • Ensure products maintain proper temperature throughout the entire fulfillment process

  • Cart orders to and place them in the holding area for customer pickup

  • Lift, carry, and load groceries into customer vehicles

  • Select, scan, and bag items from all temperature zones as needed

  • Tender customer orders through POS and process credit card payments

  • Substitute products for customers upon request or when items are unavailable

  • Answer phones and emails promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers

  • Follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards, and all department and company guidelines

  • Pitch in with other tasks or special projects as they come up

Your Skills

To be successful in this role, you'll need to be able to:

  • Bring commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for delivering an outstanding customer experience

  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and store personnel in a friendly, approachable manner

  • Stay organized and manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Identify problems and develop practical solutions, including making product substitutions on the fly

  • Work independently and complete daily workloads with limited supervision

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, Health Wellness Home; Online Shopping Department Manager

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation

  • Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment

  • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards

  • Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties

Working Environment

This is a fast-moving role with constant pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks throughout your shift. You'll work primarily in a retail store setting and may be exposed to dust, noise, temperature extremes, moving equipment hazards, and electrical equipment. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
