Job description

The Math Specialist promotes and develops successful mathematics instruction for students and coaching for teachers. The Math Specialist is responsible for assessing students' performance levels, group and individual instruction, monitoring student progress and adjusting curriculum to meet students' needs. The Math Specialist provides leadership for the school's entire mathematics program, collaborating with teachers, coaches, and administration, and serves as a resource within the school and for the community. Applicants should be innovative, enthusiastic, and highly committed to leading change. As a teacher, the Math Specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction to students, individually or in small groups, to enable students to develop math proficiency.  As a math leader, the position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive Response to Intervention program in order to ensure that KACSmeets our school wide math goals.  This work includes directly supervising math teachers and paras responsible for small group instruction and the schoolwideRtI process. It also includes coaching teachers by modeling, co-teaching, observing, and providing feedback.
Leadership, Assessment and Coaching
  • Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of parent workshops and informational sessions around math and RtI
  • Screen and assess students to establish proper performance level.
  • Provide intensive instruction to struggling students individually or in small groups within or outside of the students' classrooms.
  • Analyze school and student data and recommend modifications to instruction and interventions for students for meeting and exceeding student achievement goals.
  • Monitor student progress and arrange for academic interventions based on formative and summative assessments. 
  • Serve as a resource in the area of mathematics for paraprofessionals, teachers, administrators, and the community.
  • Collaborate with teachers to ensure student mastery of standards by assisting with data driven instructional planning, integration of technology and implementation of research based strategies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
Professional Growth and Development
  • Collaborate with instructional leadership team and administration to continuously improve instruction, culture-building and leadership skills
  • Serve in a leadership role for math professional development, team planning, and data analysis meetings.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and Director of Curriculum and Instruction to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of the overall math program and math RtI plans for students in grades K to 8.
  • Function as a school wide partner in helping to raise student achievement and character for all students in the school reinforcing school-wide expectations and volunteering to take on additional activities as needed to improve student outcomes.

  • Knowledge of research-based best practices and interventions in the area of mathematics.
  • Ability to analyze student and school data.
  • Ability to effectively develop and deliver content-specific professional learning.
  • Ability to promote collaborative planning as a component of student proficiency.
  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills.
  • High level of personal organization and planning.
  • Team player: maturity, humility, grit, flexible, follow-through, sense of humor, open to feedback and a "roll-up-my-sleeves" attitude.
  • Strong belief in the Kuumbamission and educational model.
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for subject matter.

Educational Background and Requirements:
  • Five years of teaching experience highly preferred with a proven record of high achievement
  • Master's degree in education or related field
  • Math Specialist certification, preferred
  • Eligible for certification within the State of Delaware

Compensation:
  • Salary range for this position is based on the teacher salary scale and is commensurate with experience
