Online Math Professors often face challenges such as keeping students engaged in a virtual setting, adapting teaching methods for diverse learning styles, and ensuring academic integrity during remote assessments. Addressing these issues involves using interactive teaching tools, incorporating real-world math applications, and employing strategies like regular feedback and varied instructional techniques. Professors may also collaborate with instructional designers and IT support to enhance course delivery. Building strong virtual communication with students helps create a positive online learning community and improve student outcomes.
To thrive as an Online Math Professor, you need advanced knowledge of mathematics, a relevant graduate degree (typically a master's or doctorate), and experience in teaching or education. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) like Canvas or Blackboard, video conferencing tools, and online assessment platforms is essential, and professional teaching certifications may be advantageous. Outstanding communication, digital engagement skills, and the ability to motivate students remotely are key soft skills in this position. These abilities ensure effective virtual instruction and foster a supportive, interactive learning environment for students.
An Online Math Professor is an educator who teaches mathematics courses remotely through digital platforms. They develop lesson plans, create instructional materials, conduct virtual lectures, and assess student performance. Online Math Professors may work for universities, colleges, or online education providers, delivering content through video conferencing, discussion forums, and learning management systems. Their role often includes mentoring students, providing feedback, and integrating technology to enhance learning outcomes.

Overview
Each summer, CCS runs an intensive ten-week summer conference on applied mathematical problems (SCAMP). The 2027 SCAMP is tentatively scheduled to run from June 14, 2027, through August 20, 2027. The conference concentrates on one or two problem areas, typically related to mathematics, computing or communications, of critical importance to national security.
We typically invite a dozen or two visitors to join forces with our research staff for these conferences. Our visitors are a very strong group of researchers in mathematics and computer science ranging in experience from graduate students to emeritus professors. We also occasionally invite exceptionally strong undergraduates with independent research experience.
Typically, we have a mix of new and returning participants, depending upon individual proclivity for and interest in the particular problem set. Those having an outstanding talent for our problems may also be invited to join our permanent research staff.
The first two weeks are spent attending lectures introducing the problems and the current state of knowledge. Participants spend the remaining eight weeks working on whatever problem, or piece thereof, is of interest to them. Joint work is encouraged and informal bull sessions or lectures are used to present partial results or even half-baked ideas which often stimulate better ideas. Participants typically write papers and/or well-documented code as appropriate and give summary presentations to an invited audience at the end of the summer.
Successful participants have represented a broad range of sub-fields within mathematics and computer science. However, an affinity for computation is more important than area of specialization: we are looking for researchers who have some experience with algorithms and programming and who are excited to actually compute things.
We support transparency, equity, and fairness in our compensation program and provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range based on data-driven market analysis for each position. While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent's experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is:
Qualifications
Most SCAMP participants have a PhD in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field. Graduate students and exceptional undergraduates in such fields will also be considered. For junior applicants, past participation in summer internships with the Department of Defense (such as the NSA's Director's Summer Program or Graduate Mathematics Program) or similar qualifications are helpful.
U.S. Citizenship is required
Ability to obtain and maintain a top-secret security clearance.
Application Materials Required:
Please submit the following items online to complete your application:
Cover letter explaining your interest in our SCAMP program.
Curriculum vitae.
References: Provide 2-3 professional references who can speak knowledgeably about your research contributions or letters of recommendation. Note that you are not required to submit letters of recommendation.
