What We Look For In a Adult Literacy Tutor
  • Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of foundational reading skills including letter recognition, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, basic writing skills, and functional literacy for everyday tasks.   • Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with adult literacy curricula and common challenges such as learning differences, limited prior schooling, emotional barriers to learning, and balancing instruction with life responsibilities. Adapts instruction using functional life-skills materials, multisensory methods, and patient pacing to support adult learners from pre-literacy through basic literacy levels seeking independence, employment, and educational advancement.
  • Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
  • Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
  • Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
