Job Description
General Description:
This position is responsible for leadership of the faculty services and support unit of the college's online unit, NOVA Online. Manage faculty scheduling and workload, orientation and training for new online faculty, evaluation of faculty performance, and quality assurance. Oversee statewide delivery of NOVA Online courses through Shared Services Distance Learning (SSDL) as well as Phase II delivery of courses between VCCS partner colleges.
*This position is not eligible for telework.*
Duties and Tasks:
  • Supervise development and revision of highly complex schedule of classes for online unit.
  • Supervise enrollment management activities to ensure achievement of enrollment targets.
  • Interact extensively with faculty, deans, and provosts regarding faculty scheduling and workload.
  • Supervise process for assessing faculty readiness for teaching online, orienting and training faculty to teach online, and first-year mentoring experiences for new online faculty.
  • Evaluate faculty performance through annual class observations of 700+ faculty and provide detailed input to deans and other faculty supervisors.
  • Partnering with Director of Student Services, respond to student complaints about online courses and faculty and intervene as necessary.
  • Develop and implement robust quality assurance process in partnership with instructional design team to systematically assess and improve quality of online instruction from design and facilitation perspectives.
  • Serve in key leadership role for NOVA Online. Represent NOVA Online through publishing and presenting at national conferences.
  • Oversee Shared Services Distance Learning (SSDL) program.
  • Work with Liaisons, Deans and Vice Presidents from 22 VCCS Partner colleges to ensure quality delivery of NOL courses.
  • Approve new courses for Phase II sharing between partner colleges.
  • Assist senior administrators with access to faculty credentials for accreditation purposes.
  • Train new liaisons and oversee all administration of SSDL courses including SIS coding, coding errors, billing, and communication with Liaisons.
  • Oversee correct merging of students into courses and assist with any issues that may arise. Maintain annual MOUs between colleges and manage stipends for Liaisons.
  • Ensure quality instruction through a variety of activities including management of an award for faculty excellence and other ways of showcasing excellent teaching; supporting ongoing professional development opportunities for online faculty; addressing problems with faculty performance; creating and implementing systems to routinely monitor quality of online instruction proactively; virtually conduct online classroom visits and review student evaluation data and act on findings.
  • Make regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and share feedback with supervisors for inclusion in the NOVA Brief.

  • Knowledge of best practices in online instruction, pedagogy in higher education, and trends in distance learning.
  • Knowledge of accreditation, regulatory, and compliance expectations related to distance education, including Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI), accessibility standards, identity verification, and state authorization requirements.
  • Knowledge of principles of outcomes assessment in higher education.

Minimum Work Experience:
  • Master's degree awarded by a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience collaborating with academic leadership, faculty governance bodies, and discipline groups to implement scalable online learning practices while balancing institutional consistency.
  • Experience managing/supervising faculty in higher education.
  • Experience supporting or administering shared services, consortium-based, or statewide online learning models.
  • Experience using data analytics and student success metrics to inform operational decisions, instructional improvements, enrollment strategy, or resource allocation.
  • Online teaching experience.
