IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for this position is an equity-minded individual who understands the importance of creating opportunities for students who have been historically underserved, particularly in the Latinx community. The ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to student-centered teaching practices, effective cross campus collaboration, transparent decision-making, and purposeful service to the community and embraces the role of an educator who is continually learning anti-racist pedagogy and adapting to the needs of a diverse student population.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience teaching lecture and lab courses at the community college level.
  • Broad-based experience and education that would enable the applicant to teach a wide array of Biology courses in various modalities.
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment and follow all required safety procedures.

Essential Duties
  • Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation for in-class or on-line/distance education activities, evaluation of students' work, consultation with students outside of class and/or on-line, maintenance of currency in the subjects taught.
  • Maintain accurate class and other records required by the district.
  • Submit, when due, attendance rosters and grade reports.
  • Follow course outlines as filed in the instruction offices.
  • Maintain office hours each week, as per the collective bargaining agreement.
  • Observe, support, and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District.
  • Provide each student with a written course syllabus at the beginning of the course.
  • Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
  • Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the members' area of expertise.
  • Maintain an effective classroom environment and workspace.
  • Work cooperatively within the college community.
  • Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
  • Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of everyone.
  • Perform other instructional related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Master's in any biological science OR
  • Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science
  • OR the equivalent

  1. Effective January 1, 2024, a part-time faculty member shall be eligible for the same District-sponsored medical insurance coverage provided to full-time faculty and district contribution at the current maximum annual contribution amount.
  2. In order to be eligible, part-time faculty members must meet one of the following criteria as defined in Ed. Code section 87861. The District and GCFA understand the current eligibility requirements to be the following:
    1. The part-time faculty member has a semester assignment at Gavilan College as part-time faculty equal to or greater than forty percent (40%) of a full-time District teaching assignment.
    2. The part-time faculty member must not be receiving health insurance coverage from another employer either directly, as a spouse, a domestic partner, or as a dependent.
