Job description

Job Purpose Statement: The job of Special Education Assistant II is done for the purpose of assisting in the supervision and instruction of special education high risk students; implementing educational programs and/or modifying lesson plans; works as a positive team member assisting students in developing daily living and behavioral skills; and relieving teachers of clerical and instructional tasks
Essential Job Functions
Ability to recognize and anticipate changes in student behavior for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive classroom environment.
Adapts classroom work/homework under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of providing a method to support and/or reinforce classroom objectives.
Adapts to the unique behavioral and health needs of special education high risk students.
Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students' progress and/or recognizing the individual needs of the student.
Assists teachers for the purpose of implementing lesson plans.
Assists in implementing educational programs for the purpose of meeting the individual needs of students.
Confers with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of students' progress and/or implementing student's objectives.
Maintains classroom equipment, student files/records as pertains to special education files/records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items as may be required.
Monitors individual students in the classroom or while riding the school bus for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive environment.
Participates in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.
Performs record keeping and basic clerical functions, scheduling, copying, etc. for the purpose of supporting the teacher in maintaining student files and providing classroom materials
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Attends workshops, trainings and in-services as appropriate.
Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured student, fights, etc.) For the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns
Job Requirements - Qualification
Knowledge to perform basic math including fractions, percents, and ratios (algebra and geometry at the secondary level), to read a variety of manuals, write and speak distinctly, type correspondence, memos etc. usually in prescribed formats, reports, and/or speak before groups, and to apply common sense understanding of detailed multi-step instructions. Keyboard/computer literate
Skills to perform multiple basic non-technical tasks. Specific skills to apply pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; communicate with persons of varied cultural and educational backgrounds; operate standard office equipment; prepare and maintain accurate records; and utilize pertinent software applications
Abilities to deal with a level of complexity of tasks that require significant coordinating of others person's schedules and/or activities; discretion, independent action and/or judgment with regards to working with people, diversity of equipment and interacting with persons and/or agenda that frequently change. Specific abilities to adhere to safety practices; be attentive to detail; implement established curriculum; meet deadlines and schedules; and work under time constraints; motivate and work with students (high risk populations) who exhibit unpredictable and frequently changing behaviors. Types 20 wpm.
Responsibility in relationship to people includes leading and guiding. The resources required (people, equipment, facilities) to perform necessary job functions are of a moderate scope and moderate opportunity exists for significant impact (positive or negative) on the organization's mission
Working Environment: The job functions are generally performed in an indoor/outdoor environment requiring the following significant physical abilities: reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling; sensory speaking, hearing and visual
Educational Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience Requirements: One-year experience as an Instructional Assistant. Related job experience is desirable.
Licensing, Certification, Testing Requirements: Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance; Tuberculosis clearance. CPR/First Aid is desirable (certificates from online courses are NOT acceptable). Will meet any and/or all Federal/State/District requirements.
