Position Summary

Under general supervision and with department established practice and expectation, part-time Academic and Career Education (ACE) Instructors teach assigned courses in accordance with ACE Program curriculum guidelines and fulfill the responsibilities outlined below. Applicants must be committed to serving a diverse college community. Part-time positions in the Adult Education Department are hired via contract each semester.
This role will be required to work on-site at Santa Fe Community College.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Attend and contribute to required Beginning and End of Semester meetings, cohort meetings and participate in professional development trainings.

  • Teach assigned courses, whether on campus or off campus, day or evening, following the official course guidelines and using approved learning materials.

  • Provide effective instruction in High School Equivalency subjects (Reading Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, or Science, College and Career Standards (CCRS), workforce preparation skills, academic skills, test taking skills, and digital literacy skills to ensure that the educational needs of students are met and that students achieve learning objectives.

  • Strive for minimum 65% student retention and 45% Measurable Skills Gains

  • Respond to and incorporate feedback from ACE Administrators regarding best practices in the classroom based on observations and trainings.

  • Assist with student registration, placement, and advising as assigned.

  • Start all classes on time, as scheduled, and teach for their full duration each session for total contact hours per semester unless in case of reduced hours due to weather and holidays.

  • Follow ACE Program procedures for what to do in case of needed absence.

  • Keep accurate records of student attendance for each class session and submit completed attendance reports and end of semester documents to administrative staff by stated deadlines.

  • Initiate follow-up procedures, including making phone calls, for students who miss classes.

  • Follow procedures for entering grades in LACES and Banner databases at the end of each semester.

  • Evaluate student performance via formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress, administer HSE Practice tests, advise students on progress and communicate registration recommendations for each student to ACE Program Coordinator.

  • Understand about department, college, and community resources relevant to ACE students and convey information to students when appropriate. Remain current with AE and SFCC programs and community resources, as there may be changes each semester.

  • Make recommendations for improvement to the ACE Program by evaluating course content, student needs, and instructional methods and assist in development of curriculum, and assessment materials.

  • Return all borrowed materials to the ACE offices at the end of the semester.

  • Communicate proactively and promptly with the ACE Program Administrators and instructors, both in person and electronically, in order to maintain an effective and responsive ACEProgram.

  • Although the above are typical of the duties and responsibilities normally performed, additional duties and responsibilities requiring the same or lesser skills, knowledge and dexterity may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of Academic and Career instructional methodology, assessment, materials, and digital technologies.

  • Ability to plan and implement effective High School Equivalency classroom and online instruction.

  • Ability to facilitate learning environments for linguistically, culturally, and economically diverse student population.

  • Ability to use technology for instructional and administrative functions and to meet deadlines for administrative and funding requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Reading Language Arts, Math, Science, or Social Studies.

  • Higher degreed education than required may be substituted for relevant experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluent in Spanish to teach Spanish High School Equivalency
