The Hoboken Public School District is thrilled to announce the inaugural cohort of the 2-year Hoboken Teacher Apprentice Program. Successful candidates will join a cohort that will engage in an expansive training and support program that will prepare them for a successful career as a dynamic and effective educator.
Requirements and Qualifications
The following are the minimum requirements for application to the Teacher Apprentice Program:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Limited CE, CE, CEAS, Provisional or Standard Certification in any content area
  • 2 academic or professional letters of recommendation
  • Recommendation at the end of year one for continuation to year two
  • Clear criminal history background check
  • Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status

Responsibilities
Assist in the classroom under the guidance of a lead teacher, including:
  • Implement directions, plans, and schedules as directed by the classroom teacher
  • ?Support curriculum implementation
  • Lead small group activities
  • Provide ICS Support as needed
  • Apply strategies, accommodations, and modifications for students
  • Collect data and contribute toward the development of Individualized Education Programs
  • Participate in classroom routines and procedures
  • Supervise students' practice of skills
  • Assist with room arrangement, activity centers, and field trips
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality
  • Supervise students in the hallways and during gross motor activities
  • Maintain files and records as directed by the teacher
  • Maintain punctuality and consistent attendance
  • Exhibit professional attitudes and appearance at all times
  • Follow school procedures and policies
  • Other duties as required by lead teacher or administrator

Commitment & Incentives
Successful candidates will initially commit for two consecutive school years and put forth an effort that demonstrates their commitment to not only the success of them individually, but also the success of the students and school community in which they serve.
  • One school year contract. A second year contract will be offered upon successful fulfillment of job responsibilities and observations/evaluation, no later than May 15th of their first year of employment. A second-year contract will be offered with a percentage increase that will move the employee one stuep up on the agreed-upon salary guide. It will be the employee's option to acept this second contract by June 1 of that year.
  • At the completion of the second year, a $1,000 bonus will be awarded.
  • Commitment to all required training and coaching sessions throughout the two school year period.
  • Classroom placement will be aligned with the area of certification to maximize the experience for the apprentice.

At the end of the two year period, successful Cohort One participants will be provided with priority interview status for anticipated teacher openings for the following school year.
Training Package
Throughout the 2 year program, teacher apprentices may progress through a sequence of educational experiences and training that will enhance their daily instructional support role as well as prepare them for their future careers.
  • Behavioral Technician Training (40 hours of RBT course outside of school to be completed within Semester one of year one)
  • Orton-Gilingham Classroom Educator Training
  • Mentorship program by veteran, highly-effective teaching staff throughout the 2 year period
  • Teacher Apprentice Academy monthly group coaching sessions with documentation aligned with the NJDOE requirements of the Provisional Teacher Process.
  • Quarterly Teacher Apprentice roundtables for portfolio development
  • Professional development series including topics such as Oncourse, lesson planning, classroom management & engagement strategies, social emotional learning, special education process and pedagogical practice experiences including demonstration lessons and co-teaching.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Member of Hoboken Education Association (HEA) Bargaining Unit
  • Tuition Reimbursement (matching that of non-tenured HEA staff), as per HEA Contract
  • Health Benefits and PTO as per HEA Contract
  • Minimum $33,000 first year annual salary, as per salary guide negotiated with HEA
