Job description

The Fleet Mechanic supports the maintenance and repair of trucks and equipment used across lawn care, landscape, hardscape, and commercial snow removal operations. This role is designed for a strong technician who enjoys hands-on work, values craftsmanship, and wants room to grow — but does not want to run the shop or manage people.

The Fleet Mechanic works under the Manager of Fleet & Field Development, contributing to a small, collaborative team responsible for keeping field crews productive and equipment safe, reliable, and ready for daily deployment. Work includes gas, diesel, propane, and electric equipment commonly used in landscape and snow operations.

This position requires mechanical aptitude, curiosity, and a willingness to learn specialized equipment systems over time.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Landscape equipment maintenance :  Inspect, diagnose, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on mowers, aerators, slit seeders, blowers, trimmers, edgers, and related turf equipment.

  • Hardscape & construction equipment repair :  Maintain compactors, saws, mini-skid attachments, trenchers, and other small construction tools.

  • Snow-removal equipment service :  Support repairs and seasonal prep for plows, salters, skid-steer attachments, and sidewalk snow equipment.

  • Hydraulic system troubleshooting :  Assist with diagnosing leaks, failures, and performance issues in small-equipment hydraulic systems.

  • Electrical diagnostics :  Perform basic testing and repair of wiring, switches, sensors, and battery systems.

  • Preventative maintenance (PM) execution :  Complete PM tasks according to the schedule and standards set by the Manager of Fleet & Field Development.

  • Repair list execution :  Work through the prioritized Equipment Repair List provided by the Manager of Fleet & Field Development.

  • GPS hardware support :  Assist with physical installation, removal, or troubleshooting of GPS units (Verizon Connect) when directed.

  • Fuel system support :  Help monitor fuel tank levels and assist with basic fueling system troubleshooting (Fluid Secure).

  • Seasonal changeover support :  Perform hands-on tasks for spring/summer/fall/winter equipment transitions.

  • Recall readiness support :  Assist with recall inspections or minor recall-related repairs under direction.

  • Inventory & asset updates :  Help maintain equipment condition notes and update the Master Sheet when directed.

  • Facility upkeep :  Maintain cleanliness and organization of Building #6 and the shop workspace.

  • Parts ordering & tracking :  Work with the Manager of Fleet & Field Development to source parts and track orders.

  • Fabrication & repair support :  Perform occasional light fabrication, welding, or custom adjustments as needed.

  • Safety compliance :  Follow lockout/tagout, PPE, and safe-repair procedures.

  • Documentation :  Record maintenance activities, parts usage, and service notes according to company standards.

Snow event operator support

  • Snow event operator support :  Serve as a backup operator during snow and ice events for smaller routes or specialized equipment needs, under direction of the Manager of Fleet & Field Development.
  • Storm-readiness support :  Assist with staging equipment, fueling, pre-trip inspections, and post-storm recovery tasks.

  • On-call rotation support :  Participate in an on-call rotation for storm response as assigned by the Manager of Fleet & Field Development.

Experience & Skill Requirements

  • At least four years of mechanical repair experience, or equivalent education/experience combination.
  • Experience with landscape, turf, construction, or snow removal equipment is highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of small engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and preventative maintenance.

  • Ability to collaborate with the Manager of Fleet & Field Development and field teams.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to shift tasks quickly as priorities change.

  • Basic computer literacy for diagnostics, service documentation, and parts lookup.

  • Customer-service mindset when interacting with internal field crews.

  • Ability to operate snow-removal equipment safely and confidently during winter events

Education Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Vocational/technical training in automotive, diesel, equipment repair, or hydraulics preferred.

Core Competencies for Success:
  • Mechanical Mastery: Expert-level knowledge of small-engine, diesel, and heavy-equipment repair and maintenance.

  • Proactivity: Operates with proactivity to identify potential mechanical failures before they cause production downtime.

  • Organization: Maintains highly structured maintenance schedules and tidy facilities.

  • Communication: Clear, professional, and effective communication with Division Managers regarding equipment availability and repair timelines.

  • The Carrington Way: Embodying core values, demonstrating a growth mindset, and showing a commitment to helping the production teams "win".
