Structural Designer - Level II
Company Overview
At Mitsubishi Power Americas, we're not just building better clean energy technologies; we're architecting a better future. Our team is redefining power generation to accelerate the global energy transition. We operate as one team, driven by collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Our culture is grounded in our shared values: Safety, Family, Innovative, Inclusive, Accountable, and Courageous. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future and making net zero a reality.
Role Overview
The Structural Designer - Level II is responsible for independently developing and coordinating structural drawings and 3D models for large industrial gas turbine power projects. This role works closely with Structural Engineers and cross-functional design teams to translate engineering intent into accurate, constructible designs using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D.
The position supports project execution, quality, and schedule objectives by delivering clear, coordinated models and drawings that meet project requirements and applicable codes and standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D structural models using Tekla Structures and SmartPLANT 3D with minimal supervision
  • Perform structural modeling for steel frames, equipment support structures, access platforms, ladders, stairs, and module support frames and foundations as applicable
  • Generate structural drawings including general arrangements, steel framing layouts, connection and detailing drawings, and material take-offs
  • Coordinate with piping, equipment, electrical, and civil teams to resolve clashes and ensure constructability, access, and proper clearances
  • Support module-based design considerations including transport, lifting, and erection
  • Participate in 30%, 60%, and 90% model reviews and support clash detection and resolution
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes and standards (AISC, AWS, IBC)
  • Maintain accurate model data and incorporate engineering changes in a timely manner
  • Support fabrication and construction needs by providing clear, accurate, and constructible models and drawings
  • Deliver design outputs in accordance with project schedules and milestones

Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support continuous improvement of structural modeling workflows, Tekla templates, and SmartPLANT 3D integration
  • Assist in the development and enforcement of structural modeling standards and best practices
  • Collaborate with global and regional engineering teams, including external partners and vendors
  • Protect confidential and proprietary company information
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced project environment

Requirements
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Education and/or Experience: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field (preferred), with a minimum of 5-7 years of experience in industrial or power plant structural design and modeling, including demonstrated experience supporting gas turbine, power plant, or heavy industrial projects.
Technical Skills: Strong proficiency in Tekla Structures for structural steel modeling and detailing is required, along with working experience in SmartPlant 3D (S3D) for multi-discipline plant coordination. The candidate should have a solid understanding of industrial structural steel systems, equipment support and module framing, and constructability and erection sequencing, as well as familiarity with applicable structural and industrial standards such as AISC, ASCE, and project-specific specifications. The ability to interpret engineering calculations, design criteria, and vendor information is also essential.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, effective communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting project deadlines are essential.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
