Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Energy Services Department consists of five groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generates electricity and steam, and the distribution of steam throughout campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration (provides GIS, SCADA, coordination of operational information technologies, strategic planning, and management functions). 
Together these five groups provide safe, reliable, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective steam, electricity, chilled water, sanitary sewer, reclaimed water, and potable water utility services to the University's campus. 
Cogeneration Systems primary purpose is the generation of steam to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. Steam is critical to the operations of the University and UNC Hospitals. It is used for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, sterilization of surgical instrument, distilled water production, food preparation and dish washing. Cogeneration Systems also generates electricity as a byproduct of the steam generation. It can presently supply about 30% of the peak campus electrical load.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $4,944 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,472WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,472 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
This position performs installation, operation, preventative and corrective maintenance and repair of equipment in the Coal and Ash area of Cogeneration Systems. Examples include, but is not limited to: rebuilding cylinders, replacing solenoid valves, aligning and checking tension on the old and new bags, draining and washing the tower, changing oil in fan gear boxes, rig and support with correct chains, cables and/or hoists, inspecting for coal leaks, flight conveyors, bucket elevator chains and welding.
This position must report to work during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency (emergency-duty position). Work schedule is Monday - Thursday 7:00AM - 5:30PM.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s).
Management Preferences
Utilities, fuel and/or coal handling experience in the maintenance area.
Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The environmental conditions vary tremendously from an air conditioning and heated control room to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions at various lengths of time depending on the need or operational requirements. This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with the established procedures. PPE required but not limited to: safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, back harness, respirator use/SCBA and uniforms.
Physical effort required for the position includes, but not limited to: climbing ladders/stairs (regular part of the job), working in confined spaces, being in contact with hazardous materials and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs. independently.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including without limitation the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and  less than 40 hours per week).

This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
