On Call R D Mechanical Engineer information

What is an on call R&D mechanical engineer?

An On Call R&D Mechanical Engineer is a professional who provides research and development support for mechanical engineering projects on an as-needed basis. They assist with designing, prototyping, and testing new products or components, often stepping in during peak workloads or for specialized tasks. Their role is crucial in helping companies innovate and solve engineering challenges efficiently without the commitment of a full-time position. These engineers must possess strong problem-solving skills and be adaptable to rapidly changing project requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call R&D mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On Call R&D Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and typically a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), prototyping tools, and testing equipment is often required, along with knowledge of industry standards. Strong communication, adaptability, and teamwork skills help you collaborate effectively and respond quickly to dynamic project needs. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering innovative solutions and supporting fast-paced research and development initiatives.

What is the difference between On Call R&D Mechanical Engineer vs R&D Mechanical Engineer?

AspectOn Call R&D Mechanical EngineerR&D Mechanical Engineer
Work EnvironmentOn-site or remote, with availability for emergency or urgent tasksStandard office or lab setting, regular hours
ResponsibilitiesResponds to urgent technical issues, supports ongoing projects as neededDevelops and tests new products or prototypes during scheduled hours
CredentialsTypically requires a mechanical engineering degree, relevant certificationsSame as on call, with focus on design and development skills

While both roles require similar technical credentials, the On Call R&D Mechanical Engineer is distinguished by their availability for urgent tasks outside regular hours, whereas the R&D Mechanical Engineer works primarily during scheduled times on development projects.

How does being an on call R&D mechanical engineer differ from a traditional full-time engineering role in terms of work structure and expectations?

As an On Call R&D Mechanical Engineer, you are typically engaged on a project-by-project basis, which means your work hours and responsibilities may fluctuate depending on the organization's current needs. This role often requires flexibility, rapid adaptation to new challenges, and the ability to quickly integrate with different project teams. You may be called upon to provide specialized expertise during critical phases of research and development projects, often working closely with multidisciplinary teams such as electrical engineers, designers, and project managers. This dynamic structure can provide exposure to a wide range of innovative projects and technologies, but it also demands strong communication skills and the ability to manage shifting priorities efficiently.

DescriptionThe Mechanical Engineer, Ball Screw Design supports the design, development, testing, and continuous improvement of precision ball screw assemblies used in aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. Working under the guidance of senior engineering staff, this position performs mechanical design, engineering analysis, prototype development, testing, and manufacturing support to deliver high-performance motion control products.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Design ball screw components including screw shafts, nuts, return systems, recirculation mechanisms, and drive interfaces.

  • Create and maintain detailed CAD models, drawings, and engineering documentation.

  • Assist in defining preload, geometry, lubrication, and performance requirements.

  • Perform engineering calculations related to load capacity, fatigue life, stiffness, backlash, friction, torque, and thermal performance.

  • Support finite element analysis and validation activities.

  • Evaluate component performance through analytical modeling and engineering calculations.

  • Support laboratory testing, endurance testing, load testing, efficiency evaluations, and prototype validation.

  • Analyze test results and recommend design improvements.

  • Assist with failure investigations and root cause analysis.

  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to support machining, grinding, assembly, and inspection activities.

  • Review manufacturability and assist with design improvements.

  • Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and design revisions.

  • Prepare engineering reports, calculations, specifications, and design documentation.

  • Participate in design reviews and technical meetings.

  • Maintain engineering records in accordance with company procedures.

RequirementsMinimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

  • 2–5 years of mechanical engineering experience (or equivalent internship/co-op experience).

  • Experience with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks.

  • Understanding of mechanical design principles, machine elements, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Minimum Competencies:

  • Knowledge of ball screw architecture, geometry optimization, preload techniques, and mechanical efficiency factors.
  • Expertise in failure modes, reliability engineering, and life prediction specific to rolling-element mechanisms.
  • Ability to deliver complex technical material clearly.
  • Strong capability in risk management, trade studies, and data-driven decision making.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electromechanical actuator systems.
  • Background in high-precision manufacturing or grinding/thread-rolling process development.
  • Experience with DO-160, MIL-STD environmental qualification, or similar aerospace standards.
  • Six Sigma, DFSS, or advanced reliability engineering certification.

Operational Details / Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based engineering role with periodic hands-on testing or lab work.
  • Occasional travel to customers, suppliers, or test facilities.
  • PPE may be required in some manufacturing or laboratory spaces.
