Job description

A key Optimus client is seeking a commercially minded Natural Gas Cash Trader to support the marketing and optimization of Appalachian gas production and related midstream assets. This role will focus on short-term physical trading, portfolio optimization, market analysis, and coordinating gas flow from production to end markets. The position works closely with commercial, operations, and transportation teams to maximize value while managing operational and market risk.
Key Responsibilities
  • Execute physical natural gas purchases and sales in daily and monthly markets
  • Identify and implement trading and optimization strategies that enhance portfolio value
  • Support asset and position management across transportation and marketing activities
  • Analyze market fundamentals, regional pricing dynamics, and pipeline conditions to guide trading decisions
  • Monitor operational constraints, pipeline maintenance, and grid conditions impacting near-term market opportunities
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure efficient gas flow from wellhead to market
  • Build and maintain relationships with pipelines, counterparties, marketers, and end users
  • Represent the company in communications with industry contacts and transportation providers
  • Participate in rotating on-call coverage as needed

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Energy Management, or a related discipline preferred. Equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
  • 2+ years of experience in natural gas trading, marketing, scheduling, or related commercial activities
  • Strong understanding of physical gas markets, midstream operations, and pipeline logistics
  • Knowledge of Northeast and/or Midcontinent pipeline systems and regional market fundamentals preferred
  • Familiarity with supply/demand analysis, asset optimization, and short-term trading strategies
  • Experience reviewing and working with industry-standard commercial agreements and contracts
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to evaluate market opportunities quickly
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and collaboration tools; experience with Power BI, Snowflake, or AI-enabled analytics tools is a plus
  • Effective communicator with strong relationship management skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced team environment
