What is an on call occupational therapy assistant?

On Call Occupational Therapy Assistants are licensed professionals who support occupational therapists by helping patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working. Unlike full-time staff, 'on call' assistants work as needed, often filling in during staff shortages or busy periods. They may assist with patient exercises, monitor progress, and document treatment under the supervision of an occupational therapist. Their flexible schedule allows healthcare facilities to maintain consistent care for patients. This role is common in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an on call occupational therapy assistant?

To thrive as an On Call Occupational Therapy Assistant, you need an associate degree from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program and a valid state license or certification. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), therapy documentation software, and mobility/rehabilitation equipment is typically required. Flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills for excelling in variable and fast-paced healthcare environments. These competencies ensure effective patient care, accurate documentation, and seamless collaboration with supervising therapists and healthcare teams.

How does the on-call schedule for an occupational therapy assistant impact work-life balance and team collaboration?

As an On Call Occupational Therapy Assistant, your schedule is typically variable and based on facility or patient needs, which can offer flexibility but may also require adaptability. You may need to cover shifts on short notice, including evenings or weekends, which can affect personal routines. However, this role allows you to collaborate with a diverse team of therapists, nurses, and other assistants, often working together to ensure continuity of care for patients. Regular communication with supervising Occupational Therapists is essential for staying updated on patient plans and integrating smoothly into ongoing therapy sessions.
