Job Description
Locksmith II maintains locks, keys, and mechanical door hardware. Primary job functions require exercising some independent judgment, certain degree of creativity and latitude. A variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties are performed to carry out the essential functions of this position, and Locksmith II should have experience and/or training in various skilled craft areas. The technician may also be responsible for escorting and supervising contractor activities occurring on campus as requested by supervisor.
This position requires knowledge gained through prior experience with locks, keys, mechanical door hardware, and doors. Utilizes familiarity with a variety of the field's standard concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the advanced functions of the job. Performs some complicated tasks; relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Primary job functions require exercising some independent judgment. Exercises a certain degree of creativity and latitude. This position also requires skill in analyzing system malfunctions and determining appropriate repairs.
This position's primary responsibilities include maintenance and repairs of locks, keys, and mechanical door hardware; duplicates keys; repairs, replaces, opens, and re-keys locks. Knowledgeable in the processes and safety measures in various skilled craft area(s). This position is responsible for reporting any complex or unusual maintenance problems to the Supervisor. Traveling to other campuses is required. This position requires customer service skills. This job requires physical abilities such as trunk strength, manual dexterity, and wrist-finger movement to perform the essential functions of the position. Working conditions include exposure to hazardous materials and fumes, elevated areas (i.e., over six feet), varied weather conditions, dirty environments, noisy environments, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. This position is identified as "Essential Personnel" and may be required to report to work during emergencies or when the university is closed. This Position may be required to participate in On-Call rotation.
Responsibilities
Primary duties:
  • Cut new or duplicate keys, using key-cutting machines.
  • Cut new or duplicate keys using impressions or code key machines.
  • Keep records of locks and keys.
  • Set up and maintain master key systems.

Corrective Maintenance:
  • Disassemble mechanical or electrical locking devices, and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs, and other parts, using hand tools.
  • Insert new or repaired tumblers into locks to change combinations.
  • Install door hardware such as locks and closers.
  • Move pick-locks in cylinders to open door locks without keys.
  • Assist with installing electronic access systems.
  • Perform repairs on manual and electronic doors.
  • Replace/install shop machinery such as key cutting machine, grinder, etc.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them using repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.

Support:
Provide support services to other trades, projects and contractors (as required) for timely and efficient repair of buildings and/or equipment.
Other duties:
  • Use computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) for work orders.
    Read and maintain, where necessary, appropriate system blueprints and schematics. Maintain appropriate logs and records of systems operations to help create Key Performance Indicators (KPls).
  • Maintain inventory records, initiate purchases of materials and parts used for repairs.
    Drive USF vehicles, clean & maintain shop, and clean & maintain personal equipment and assigned tools/equipment.
  • May perform hurricane preparation duties such as clearing roof drains, drain grates, filing and deploying sandbags.
  • May provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited technical school or an applicable skilled trades program and two (2) years of appropriate experience in the field or related area; appropriate vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. Valid Florida Class E operator (driver) license.
Position subject to a Level 2 background check and drug screen.
