On Call Employee information

What is an on call employee?

On call employees are workers who are not scheduled for regular shifts but are available to work when needed, often with short notice. They may be contacted by their employer to fill in for absent staff or to handle unexpected increases in workload. On call work is common in industries like healthcare, hospitality, retail, and emergency services. Compensation and expectations for on call employees can vary depending on the employer and local labor laws. It's important for on call employees to understand their rights and the terms of their on call arrangements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call employee?

To thrive as an On Call Employee, you need flexibility, reliability, and the ability to quickly learn and adapt to different tasks or environments, often requiring a high school diploma or relevant experience. Familiarity with scheduling software, communication tools, and any job-specific systems is often necessary. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you respond effectively to last-minute requests and changes. These skills are crucial because on call roles demand immediate availability and the ability to perform effectively under unpredictable circumstances.

How does the unpredictable schedule of an on call employee impact work-life balance, and what strategies can help manage it?

On Call Employees often face unpredictable schedules, as they must be available to work on short notice when demand arises. This can make it challenging to maintain a consistent work-life balance, especially when shifts are assigned with little advance warning. To manage this, it's helpful to proactively communicate your availability to your employer, plan flexible personal activities, and set clear boundaries when possible. Many organizations also provide scheduling tools or apps to help on call staff track open shifts and plan ahead. Over time, experience and familiarity with typical shift patterns can make it easier to anticipate busy periods and adjust accordingly.

What is the difference between On Call Employee vs Part-Time Employee?

AspectOn Call EmployeePart-Time Employee
Work ScheduleAs needed, unpredictable hoursSet hours, usually fewer than 30 hours/week
CertificationsOften minimal; depends on industrySimilar; may require specific certifications
Work EnvironmentVaries; often temporary or flexibleConsistent, scheduled shifts
Employer UsageUsed for coverage during peak times or absencesUsed for ongoing, part-time roles

On Call Employees work irregular hours based on employer needs, often with minimal notice, while Part-Time Employees have scheduled, predictable hours. Both roles may require similar certifications depending on the industry, but their work patterns and employment terms differ significantly.

Do you get paid for just being on call?

On call employees are typically paid for the time they are available to work, which may include a standby or on-call pay rate. However, they usually do not receive pay for periods when they are not actively working or responding to calls, unless specified by their employment agreement or company policy. Payment structures can vary depending on the employer and industry standards.

Job description

On-Call Project Archaeologist (Remote)

Southeast Region (GA, SC, TN or vicinity)

About On-Call Employment with ICF

Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental work, ICF often hires environmental professionals as "On-Call" employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (we usually schedule work hours a few weeks ahead of time), and each on-call employee is free to accept or refuse the hours assigned to them in a given week. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their ICF assignment (as long as their outside work does not create a conflict of interest with the work they do for ICF).

ICF is currently seeking an On-Call Project Archaeologist to support the growth of our cultural resources practice in the Eastern U.S., especially on energy, transportation, and federal sector projects in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. Applicants living throughout that region are encouraged to apply.

Job Description

As a Project Archaeologist at ICF, you will lead and/or contribute to archaeology and cultural resources studies as either stand-alone projects or as part of larger multi-disciplinary projects. Technical duties will include conducting background research, field survey, laboratory analysis, and eligibility evaluation and documenting the results in technical reports suitable for agency and SHPO consultation. You will also combine your archaeology technical skills with regulatory compliance expertise to support project-level analysis and programmatic solutions for NEPA and Section 106 compliance (and state compliance, as applicable). The Project Archaeologist will work closely with our Senior Archaeologists and Historic Preservation Specialists on project work, with opportunities to direct and mentor early career team members.

What You Will Do

  • Conduct archaeological surveys, testing, and data recovery for projects primarily in the Southeastern US and Mid-Atlantic. Duties will include field supervision of on-call staff conducting excavation of close interval shovel tests and formal excavation units.
  • Provide analysis/writing for environmental regulatory reviews under NEPA, NHPA, and state requirements.
  • Contribute to technical expertise in archaeology, including technical approach development, analysis and documentation, and collaboration with junior and senior technical colleagues.
  • Write and produce technical reports or documents.
  • Evaluate resources for the National Register of Historic Places. Develop resource management recommendations and assess project effects on resources.
  • Collaborate with architectural and landscape historians toward an integrated multi-disciplinary approach to cultural resources management.
  • Collaborate in an integrated team with engineers, scientists, planners, regulators, and other stakeholders.

What You Must Have (Minimum quals)

  • Master's degree in Anthropology/Archaeology or related field.
  • 3+ years of professional, related experience.
  • Meets Secretary of the Interior's Qualification Standards for Archaeology

What We'd Like You To Have (Preferred quals)

  • Demonstrated capability to serve as Field Director on archaeological field studies.
  • Be able to conduct field work in remote locations and be comfortable in the field environment
  • Knowledgeable in Southeast archaeology; familiarity with other regions of the U.S. is a plus
  • Command of NEPA, NHPA, and other state and federal environmental regulations.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and experienced with variety of GPS equipment
  • Specialization in historic archaeology, geoarchaeology, zooarchaeology, lithic analysis, or bioarchaeology.
  • Meaningful experience conducting or supporting consultation with Tribal representatives.
  • Participation in project budget development, project schedules, production of deliverables, and QA/QC process tracking.
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist

Professional skills you will use:

  • Demonstrated capability to adhere to project budgets, schedules, and deliverables
  • Problem-solving ability, creativity, analytical skills.
  • Orientation toward fulfilling client objectives.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Predisposed to continued professional growth.
