What is an on call biologist?

An On Call Biologist is a professional who works on an as-needed basis to support biological surveys, environmental assessments, and conservation projects. They may conduct fieldwork, collect data, monitor wildlife, or assist with regulatory compliance. This role offers flexibility but requires availability on short notice. It is common in industries such as environmental consulting, government agencies, and research organizations.

What types of projects and environments can an on call biologist expect to work in?

On Call Biologists often support a variety of projects, including wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, environmental impact studies, and compliance monitoring for construction or land development. You may work in diverse environments such as wetlands, forests, urban sites, or along waterways, sometimes during irregular hours or in response to urgent client needs. Collaboration with ecologists, environmental consultants, land managers, or government agencies is common, offering the opportunity to build a broad professional network. The variety of projects both challenges biologists to adapt quickly and provides rich, hands-on learning experiences in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on call biologist?

To thrive as an On Call Biologist, you typically need a degree in biology, ecology, or a related field, along with hands-on fieldwork experience. Familiarity with data collection tools, GIS software, and environmental monitoring equipment is commonly required, and specific certifications (such as HAZWOPER or first aid) may be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, flexibility, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies are essential for delivering accurate biological assessments, responding to urgent tasks, and collaborating efficiently under time-sensitive conditions.

Are on call biologists in high demand?

On call biologists are in moderate demand, especially in environmental consulting, research, and conservation fields. Their availability depends on project needs and seasonal factors, with skills in data collection and fieldwork being highly valued.

Can an on call biologist work remotely?

On call biologists can sometimes work remotely, especially for tasks such as data analysis, report writing, or research planning that do not require fieldwork. However, fieldwork, sample collection, and site visits typically require physical presence, so the ability to work remotely depends on the specific responsibilities of the position and employer policies.
