About this Role
NorthStar Energy Services is seeking a Pipeline Engineer / Project Engineer to join our collaborative multidisciplinary team. This dual-role position combines hands-on pipeline design with broader project leadership, offering the opportunity to support projects from routing and analysis through construction, hydrotesting, commissioning, and startup.
What You'll Do
In this role, you will develop pipeline engineering deliverables for gathering, transmission, and distribution systems, including routing, hydraulics, wall thickness and MAOP/MOP determination, crossings, and testing plans. As Project Engineer, you will also help define scope, schedule, and budget; coordinate procurement and vendor activities; and serve as a key technical connection among clients, internal disciplines, and third-party partners throughout the project lifecycle, including construction and field implementation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • PIPELINE ENGINEERING
    • Perform engineering analyses, calculations, and design activities for a broad range of pipeline deliverables, including:
      • Route Selection and Routing Studies, Alignment Sheets, and Right-of-Way Support
      • Steady-State and Transient Hydraulic Analysis, including Surge Analysis and Pump/Compressor Station Hydraulics
      • Pipe Wall Thickness Calculations, MAOP/MOP Determination, and Class Location Analysis
      • Crossing Design (road, railroad, waterway, wetland, and foreign utility), including HDD, Bore, and Open-Cut Methods
      • Line Pipe, Valve, Fitting, and Flange Material Specifications
      • Mainline Block Valve, Pig Launcher/Receiver, and Trap Facility Design
      • Hydrostatic Test Plans and Test Section Design
      • Pipeline Stress Analysis and Depth-of-Cover/Buoyancy Control Design
    • Coordinate cathodic protection and corrosion-control requirements
    • Support permitting, easement, and regulatory submittals by preparing and coordinating required design information and exhibits
    • Provide independent technical review of project alignment sheets, PFDs, and P&IDs for constructability, operability, and multidisciplinary coordination
    • Ensure project compliance with applicable codes and standards, including:
      • Title 49 CFR Parts 190-199 (including Parts 192 and 195)
      • ASME B31.4 and B31.8 Pipeline Systems
      • ASME B31G Remaining Strength of Corroded Pipelines
      • API 5L Line Pipe and API 6D Pipeline Valves
      • API 1104 Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities
      • API RP 1102 Steel Pipelines Crossing Railroads and Highways
  • PROJECT ENGINEERING & DELIVERABLE MANAGEMENT
    • Serve as Project Engineer for assigned projects, with responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and coordinated technical execution across engineering disciplines
    • Coordinate multidisciplinary deliverables and serve as the primary day-to-day technical point of contact for the client
    • Develop and maintain core project documentation, including design basis documents, scopes of work, deliverable lists, and progress reports
    • Support procurement through RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations for line pipe, valves, and pipeline materials; review vendor drawings for compatibility with the intended design
    • Perform QA/QC reviews of drawings and cross-discipline deliverables to verify safe, code-compliant designs that align with project objectives
    • Incorporate company standards, municipal requirements, and applicable regulatory codes into project deliverables
    • Respond to RFIs, technical queries, and design changes throughout the project lifecycle with clear, timely technical guidance
    • Conduct field assessments, route walkdowns, and construction site visits, and review survey and geotechnical information to support design development
    • Provide engineering support during construction, commissioning, and startup, including hydrotest activities, punch list resolution, and as-built documentation

  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
    • 3+ years of pipeline design experience in the midstream energy, oil and gas, or petrochemical sector
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite
    • Preferred, but not required: Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the State of Texas, or the ability to obtain one
