How much do offshore welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for offshore welding in the United States is $29.79, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.32 and $34.13 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offshore welder?

To thrive as an Offshore Welder, you need expertise in welding techniques, blueprint reading, and a recognized welding certification, such as AWS or ASME, often combined with offshore safety training. Familiarity with specialized equipment like submerged arc welding machines, cutting torches, and safety systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in challenging environments set top candidates apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring structural integrity, safety, and efficiency in demanding offshore conditions.

What is offshore welding?

Offshore welding is a specialized field where welders work on structures located in bodies of water, such as oil rigs, ships, and underwater pipelines. These welders must be skilled in both traditional welding techniques and working in challenging marine environments, often requiring certifications in underwater or hyperbaric welding. Offshore welders play a critical role in the construction, maintenance, and repair of offshore infrastructure, making their work essential for industries like oil and gas.

What is the difference between Offshore Welding vs Underwater Welding?

AspectOffshore WeldingUnderwater Welding
CertificationsWelding certifications (e.g., AWS, ASME)Commercial diving certifications, underwater welding certifications
Work EnvironmentOn oil rigs, ships, or offshore platforms above waterUnderwater, often in deep or challenging water conditions
Industry UsageOil & gas, shipbuilding, offshore constructionOil & gas, ship repair, underwater infrastructure

Offshore Welding involves welding on structures above water, typically on oil rigs or platforms, requiring standard welding certifications. Underwater Welding, on the other hand, is performed beneath the water surface, demanding specialized diving and underwater welding certifications. Both roles are vital in the offshore industry but differ significantly in environment and certification requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by offshore welders, and how can they prepare for them?

Offshore welders often encounter challenges such as working in harsh weather conditions, limited space, and the need to adhere to strict safety protocols. The role may also require adapting to long shifts, living on-site for extended periods, and performing welding tasks at unusual angles or underwater. To prepare, candidates should develop strong technical skills, maintain excellent physical fitness, and be comfortable working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Familiarity with offshore safety standards and certifications, such as BOSIET and underwater welding qualifications, can also provide a significant advantage.
