Job description

Offshore Shift Supervisor

General Purpose:

Reporting to the SOV Shift Manager, the Offshore Shift Supervisor is the onsite operational leader for offshore wind turbine service activities at the Empire Wind project. This role provides direct supervision of offshore technicians servicing and maintaining the V236 turbine fleet and holds daytoday responsibility for safe work execution, operational coordination, and field decisionmaking. Working in close alignment with the SOV Shift Manager and site support functions, the Offshore Shift Supervisor ensures offshore operations are planned, controlled, and executed in compliance with safety requirements, customer expectations, and company standards, while maintaining reliable turbine performance and orderly offshore workflows. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Take responsibility for critical safety and operational decisions, escalating issues as required. 
  • Demonstrate visible HSE leadership by promoting a proactive safety culture and exercising clear stopwork authority for any unsafe condition or change in risk profile. 
  • Ensure full compliance with Vestas' Health and Safety Management System and all applicable offshore HSE requirements. 
  • Serve as a role model for offshore technicians, setting expectations for safe behavior, professionalism, and operational discipline. 
  • Manage and ensure electrical safety within wind turbines through audits, coaching, and strict adherence to WTSR principles. 
  • Review Approved Written Procedures, Risk Assessments, and supporting documentation prior to work execution. 
  • Act as the primary offshore operational interface between the customer, SOV crew, site leadership, and field technicians during active shifts. 
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering safe, compliant, and reliable offshore operations while managing expectations and constraints. 
  • Monitor weather forecasts continuously and assess operational impacts on transfers, turbine access, and task execution. 
  • Prepare, approve, and communicate daily transfer plans and ensure alignment with vessel operations and site activities. 
  • Organize and coordinate vessel and O&M crew transfers, ensuring personnel safety, logistical readiness, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Supervise and coordinate offshore operations in close alignment with the SOV Shift Manager, providing mutual operational support as needed. 
  • Ensure all service work orders are active, accurate, and ready in SAP in collaboration with the Lead Tech before technicians mobilize to turbines. 
  • Own offshore execution readiness by validating planning inputs, tool accuracy, material readiness, SAP status, and operational feasibility prior to work execution. 
  • Actively contribute to daily, weekly, and longterm service operations planning with a focus on safety, efficiency, and resource optimization. 
  • Review and monitor wind farm performance using VOB SCADA, Power BI, CMS, and site KPIs to support operational decisionmaking. 
  • Allocate Shadow Data daily and ensure accuracy and alignment with actual work performed offshore. 
  • Prepare clear and accurate daily operational reports capturing work performed, deviations, risks, and lessons learned. 
  • Contribute to monthly customer reporting by ensuring accurate performance, production, and operational data inputs. 
  • Review operational performance trends and identify improvement opportunities to enhance safety, reliability, and productivity. 
  • Identify, prioritize, and support the implementation of continuous improvement  initiatives (CIMs), ensuring changes are operationally feasible and embedded in execution. 
  • Support proactive repairs and upgrades through coordination, risk assessment, and execution readiness. 
  • Plan and support annual service and maintenance activities in collaboration with the SOV Shift Manager and Lead Tech. 
  • Contribute to longterm service strategy and operational planning with the SOV Shift Manager and Lead Tech. 
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to offshore technicians to support competence development and longterm capability. 
  • Assist with turbine maintenance, inspections, troubleshooting, or audits as required to support safe operations, escalation management, and field credibility. 
  • Ensure customer technicians are trained, inducted, and utilized to the same standards as site technicians. 
  • Travel extensively (100%) prior to Empire Wind becoming operational (est. October 2026) to become familiar with the offshore environment and learn new Vestas platforms. This includes travel across the USA, Europe, or Asia for offshore/onshore turbines and downtower installation activities. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Ability to promote a strong site safety culture while driving high operational performance and maintaining a costconscious approach. 
  • Ability to provide direct supervision and field oversight, including leading daily work activities and ensuring technicians execute tasks safely and effectively. 
  • Ability to complete and maintain all required operational reporting and documentation, including work orders, daily logs, maintenance records, and safety paperwork. 
  • Ability to make informed operational decisions using multiple information sources. 
  • Ability to work and live on a Service Operations Vessel in various weather conditions and sea states. 
  • Ability to function as an experienced WTG Technician and solve complex electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical problems within the turbine. 
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to climb towers unassisted up to 475 feet. 
  • Ability to obtain OEUK Medical Clearance and successfully pass a Chester Step Test. 

Education, Training, and Skills Required: 

  • Electrical, mechanical, or hydraulic experience with a strong desire to further develop skills in these fields. 
  • Must have completed TBC 300 Core & Specific tasks on any platform or be recognized as an ALevel Technician. 
  • Must be nominated as an ATLT, or have a reasonable path to achieving ATLT status within 6 months of hire. 
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced working knowledge of industrial safety practices and protocols (e.g., confined space, energy isolation). 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working in a commercial-industrial mechanical or electrical environment, preferably with wind turbines. 
  • Strong understanding of VOB SCADA operations and Toolkit. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams) and IT tools (smartphones, computers, etc.). 
  • Able to safely work in adverse climates and environments. 
  • Valid driver's license, ability to obtain a passport, and willingness to travel. 
  • Must be capable of leading and gaining the trust of a diverse team. 
  • Comfortable handling customer requests and interactions.

Physical Demands 

  • Ability to work and live onboard a Service Operations Vessel in various weather conditions and sea swells. 
  • Ability to work in demanding physical and inclement weather conditions. 
  • Ability to work in a seated indoor environment or inside a wind turbine for extended periods of time. 
  • Ability to frequently walk, stand, look up/down, balance, stoop, twist, kneel, and bend. 
  • Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 50 lbs. 
  • Total weight including all required PPE and gear (up to 40 lbs) must be below the 300lb safety limit. 
  • To meet this requirement, body weight may not exceed 260 lbs. 

Salary & Career Growth

The base pay salary range for this position is $39.83-$47.83, with potential for additional variable compensation. Pay will be determined based on experience and qualifications.

Motion from sea swells should be expected while aboard the vessel. 

Living and working conditions may vary based on the specific SOV configuration. Typical vessel accommodations may include sleeping quarters, restroom and shower facilities, meal service, and shared or designated recreational areas. These conditions are not guaranteed and may differ by vessel or assignment.
