Offshore Structural Engineer Sacs information

What does an offshore structural engineer SACS do?

An Offshore Structural Engineer Sacs specializes in designing, analyzing, and maintaining offshore structures such as oil platforms, wind turbines, and subsea installations using SACS software. Their role involves ensuring these structures can withstand harsh marine environments, including waves, wind, and seismic activity. They use SACS (Structural Analysis Computer System) to model, simulate, and verify the integrity and safety of offshore platforms. Their work is crucial for the safe operation and longevity of offshore assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offshore structural engineer SACS?

To thrive as an Offshore Structural Engineer SACS, you need a strong background in structural engineering, offshore design codes, and a relevant engineering degree. Proficiency in SACS software, finite element analysis tools, and knowledge of industry standards like API and ISO are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in this role. These competencies ensure that offshore structures are designed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with stringent regulatory requirements.

How does an offshore structural engineer SACS typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams during project execution?

Offshore Structural Engineers who specialize in SACS frequently work alongside professionals from multiple disciplines, including naval architects, geotechnical engineers, project managers, and fabrication teams. Effective communication and collaboration are crucial, as structural designs must align with project specifications, safety standards, and installation constraints. Engineers often participate in design review meetings, coordinate interface points, and provide technical support to ensure that the structural analysis using SACS integrates seamlessly with other engineering deliverables. This collaborative approach helps identify potential issues early and ensures the successful delivery of offshore projects.

What is the difference between Offshore Structural Engineer Sacs vs Offshore Structural Designer?

AspectOffshore Structural Engineer SacsOffshore Structural Designer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, certifications like SACS or similarBachelor's or Master's in Civil/Structural Engineering, often with design software certifications
Work EnvironmentOn-site offshore projects, engineering analysis, structural assessmentsDesign offices, project planning, creating structural models
Industry UsageEngineering, construction, offshore oil & gas, renewable energyDesign firms, engineering consultancies, offshore project developers

While both roles involve offshore structures, Offshore Structural Engineer Sacs focuses on engineering analysis and structural integrity assessments, often using SACS software, whereas Offshore Structural Designer emphasizes creating detailed structural designs and models. Both roles require similar credentials and work in related environments but serve different stages of the project lifecycle.

Job description

Join Saipem and engineer a sustainable future. We are a global leader in engineering and construction for the energy and infrastructure sectors, delivering complex onshore and offshore projects worldwide. Driven by technological innovation as “One Company”, our 30,000 people from over 130 nationalities in more than 50 countries work every day to enable the energy transition toward Net Zero. At Saipem, your expertise helps shape the future globally for environmental sustainability.

Purpose of the position

As Offshore Structural Engineer, you will respond to the Offshore Structural Lead and be part of the Asset Based Business Line within the Engineering function. You will support the ongoing EPCI projects that Saipem has in the Americas region performing structural calculations, design for lifting and rigging, and seafastening.

Responsibilities
  • In charge of the design of incorporated subsea structures and/or associated installation aids and sea-fastening, for deepwater and shallow water field development.
  • Perform technical tasks assigned by the Subsea Structural Lead such as structural analyses, calculations, design, verification or study activities, specification/requisition writing.
  • Provide data to Designers to allow the creation of 3D and 2D design drawings. Review the design drawings.
  • Interface with other Project Specialists (installation, geotechnical, flowline, subsea equipment, fabrication, etc.) and Designers.
  • Cumulate an experience about the design limitation and constraint imposed by offshore installation and related vessels.
  • Provide support to the Subsea Structural lead for coordination and review of technical activities performed inside or outside Saipem.
  • Participate and contribute to:
    • Project progress meeting,
    • Engineering coordination meetings
    • Interface meetings with Client, other Contractors and Sub-Contractors
    • Technical review meeting (concerning Procurement, Engineering, Fabrication, Operation, Interface)
    • HSE meetings
    • Risk Assessment
  • Design structural systems and components, pursuing objectives of robust engineering and design optimization in term of costs, fabrication simplicity, constructability and safety, in particular
  • Select the most relevant design loads and boundary condition to maximize the installation and in-place acceptable configurations, even unexpected, but always reasonably
  • Check the selected design comply with all the structure functionalities, including constructability and offshore installability constraints
  • Select the profiles and materials as standard as possible to simplify the procurement. Local procurement can be a constraint if requested by the project
  • Check the permanent structures are sufficiently reliable for a long time, without maintenance during the subsea field life.
  • Particularly considering need of redundancy, high reliability, as well as corrosion and fatigue aspect
  • Check that the installation aids are focused on the operational practicality and on the safety of workers
  • For permanent structure, liaise with other Project discipline team (offshore installation, geotechnical, flowline, subsea equipment, fabrication, material, etc.), whenever required for a proper completion of the work assigned, particularly to obtain the confirmation of the preliminary load cases or fabrication assumption considered at start of the project
  • For installation aids structure, liaise with Installation method team in order to clarify the functional scope of work used as basis and to define the technical structural solution
  • Carry out/Check/Supervise structural analyses. Particularly, define own load and boundary condition assumption, as well as the good level of modelization (hand calculation, beam model, FEA model), sufficient to provide the demonstration of the structure capacity
  • Use the industry calculation software following the user manual, for a good selection and application of the numerical tools Interface with Designer to Provide data necessary for the creation of 3D and 2D design drawings (including geometrical, material, welding, tolerance and functional data). Supervise/Approve steel structures design drawings
  • Review Client technical documentation and requirements. Answers to the Client comments
  • Write design reports and calculation notes
  • Supervise setting up of bill of quantities or material take off (MTO)
