What is an offshore structural designer?

Offshore Structural Designers are professionals who design and develop structures used in offshore environments, such as oil rigs, platforms, and subsea supports. They use specialized engineering software to create detailed drawings and plans that ensure the safety, stability, and durability of these structures in harsh marine conditions. Their role involves collaborating with engineers, project managers, and construction teams to translate technical requirements into buildable designs while adhering to industry standards and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offshore structural designer?

To thrive as an Offshore Structural Designer, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, proficiency in offshore design codes, and a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, STAAD.Pro, and SACS, along with knowledge of 3D modeling and drafting tools, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and cost-effective design of offshore structures, directly impacting project success and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by offshore structural designers when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Offshore Structural Designers often collaborate closely with engineers, drafters, and project managers from various disciplines, such as electrical, mechanical, and piping. One common challenge is ensuring that all structural plans integrate seamlessly with other systems, which requires strong communication and coordination skills. Additionally, adapting designs to changing project requirements or site conditions while maintaining regulatory compliance can be demanding. Proactively engaging with other team members and staying updated on project developments helps mitigate these challenges and ensures successful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Offshore Structural Designer vs Offshore Structural Engineer?

AspectOffshore Structural DesignerOffshore Structural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in civil or structural engineering, with design certificationsRequires a degree in civil or structural engineering, often with additional engineering licenses
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing structural components for offshore platforms, working in design offices or on-siteInvolves analysis, design, and oversight of offshore structures, often on-site or in project offices
Industry UsageCommonly used in design phases, preparing drawings and specificationsUsed throughout the project lifecycle, including analysis, testing, and supervision

While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in the offshore industry, Offshore Structural Designers primarily focus on creating detailed structural designs, whereas Offshore Structural Engineers oversee analysis, testing, and implementation of these designs. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Job description

NVIDIA, the AI computing company, has transformed computer graphics, parallel computing, and deep learning with the invention of the GPU in 1999. As we continue to grow, we are seeking top talent to help drive further innovation. We are currently hiring a Senior Structural Test Engineer to join our Test Team. In this role, you will build next-generation boards and systems while collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers to deliver functional test hardware solutions.

The ideal candidate will define and drive the structural test plan for baseboards and systems, review design concepts, and establish validation strategies. You will develop and automate test infrastructure configurations, ensuring coverage of key product features while optimizing cost, quality, and manufacturability. You will also lead the implementation of structural test plans to detect SMT, PCB, and component issues as early as possible. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across diverse product lines, from consumer graphics to autonomous vehicles and AI technologies.

What you will be doing:

  • Define ICT capability, hardware design requirements, and board debug capabilities, enabling structural testing at Texas CM sites.

  • Optimize structural test plans to identify SMT, PCB, and component issues early.

  • Collaborate with board designers, layout engineers, tester vendors, and fixture providers, offering DFM guidance to meet ICT requirements.

  • Support production bring-up and debugging, including offshore tester platform bring-up involving ICT, BSI, FCT universal testers, and more.

  • Coordinate test fixtures and platform automation with suppliers, contract manufacturers, and global teams.

  • Develop procedures, documentation, and provide technical support as needed.

What you need to see:

  • Master's degree (or equivalent experience) in Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, or related fields.

  • At least 5 years of experience in ICT programming, fixture design/manufacturing, and factory testing.

  • Strong understanding of ICT development, hardware design, board debugging, and structural testing.

  • Solid knowledge of board manufacturing processes, PCB/fixture design, and proven program management capability.

  • Excellent communication, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong team collaboration and analytical abilities with effective work habits.

  • Self-starter able to complete tasks with minimal supervision.

  • This position is 100% on-site based at either our Dallas or Houston Contract Manufacturing (CM) facility. Candidates must be able to work full-time on-site at one of these locations (this role does not offer remote or hybrid arrangements).

We offer competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package, and are widely recognized as one of the most desirable employers in the technology industry. With rapid growth, our teams continue to expand. We are looking for creative, self-driven individuals with a passion for technology to join us and help shape the future of computing.

Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and the pay of employees in similar positions. The base salary range is 132,000 USD - 207,000 USD for Level 3, and 152,000 USD - 253,000 USD for Level 4.

You will also be eligible for equity and benefits.

Applications for this job will be accepted at least until August 15, 2026.
