How much do offshore engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for offshore engineering in the United States is $146,868.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,500.00 and $173,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior offshore engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications in subsea systems or project management, can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually. High compensation often reflects leadership roles, complex project responsibilities, and working in high-demand environments with long hours or offshore schedules.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offshore Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Engineer, a strong background in engineering principles, problem-solving, and a relevant degree (such as in mechanical, civil, or marine engineering) is essential. Familiarity with industry-specific software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and offshore safety certifications such as BOSIET or HUET are typically required. Excellent teamwork, adaptability, and communication skills are crucial for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams and working in challenging offshore environments. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, efficient project execution and help maintain high safety and performance standards in demanding offshore settings.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior offshore engineers, especially those with extensive experience, specialized skills, and certifications in subsea systems or project management, can earn $300,000 or more annually. High-level roles often involve leadership, complex technical expertise, and working in challenging environments, which contribute to higher compensation.

What is the difference between Offshore Engineering vs Marine Engineering?

AspectOffshore EngineeringMarine Engineering
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in offshore safety and project managementEngineering degree, certifications in marine systems and safety
Work EnvironmentOffshore platforms, oil rigs, subsea installationsShips, ports, shipyards, marine vessels
Industry UsageOil & gas, renewable energy, subsea constructionShipping, naval architecture, marine equipment manufacturing

Offshore Engineering focuses on designing, constructing, and maintaining structures and systems in offshore environments like oil rigs and subsea installations. Marine Engineering, on the other hand, deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of ships, boats, and other marine vessels. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve working in marine-related environments, Offshore Engineering is more specialized in offshore structures and energy projects, whereas Marine Engineering centers on vessel design and maritime systems.

What kind of engineers work offshore?

Offshore engineering typically involves various engineers such as mechanical, electrical, civil, and petroleum engineers who design, install, and maintain equipment and infrastructure for offshore oil and gas extraction, renewable energy projects, and subsea systems. These engineers often require specialized training, safety certifications, and knowledge of offshore environments and tools like ROVs and subsea pipelines.

What is offshore engineering?

Offshore engineering is a field of engineering focused on the design, construction, and maintenance of structures and systems located in bodies of water, typically for the extraction of oil, gas, and renewable energy. Offshore engineers work on projects such as oil rigs, wind farms, pipelines, and subsea installations. Their work often involves addressing challenges posed by harsh marine environments, ensuring safety, and optimizing performance. The field requires expertise in civil, structural, mechanical, and marine engineering disciplines.

How much do offshore engineers make?

Offshore engineers typically earn between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and specialization. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in subsea systems or project management can earn higher salaries, often supplemented by offshore allowances and overtime pay.

What are some common challenges faced by offshore engineers, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Offshore engineers often contend with harsh environmental conditions, complex logistics, and strict safety protocols while working on remote platforms or vessels. Effective communication and adaptability are essential, as teams are typically multicultural and interdisciplinary. To address these challenges, offshore engineers rely on thorough planning, continuous safety training, and leveraging technology like remote monitoring systems to ensure project success and personal safety. Building strong teamwork and maintaining a proactive approach to problem-solving can also greatly enhance the offshore work experience.
