Offshore DP Systems Director of Software & Controls Engineering

Job Summary
This strategic role involves driving software architecture, embedded controls development, product innovation, and engineering execution across a growing organization. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams developing software solutions that directly influence vessel maneuverability, automation, safety, and operational performance. This position is ideal for a senior software engineering leader with expertise in industrial automation, control systems, marine technology, offshore energy, robotics, autonomous systems, or other regulated environments where software reliability and real-time performance are paramount.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of software and controls engineers, establishing scalable processes and best practices for software development.
  • Conduct performance reviews, career development planning, and technical coaching while supporting recruiting and organizational growth initiatives.
  • Oversee architecture, design, development, integration, and testing of embedded software and control systems supporting marine automation and vessel control technologies.
  • Guide the development of real-time software applications, review software architecture, technical specifications, code quality, and system performance.
  • Drive the adoption of modern software development practices including automated testing, CI/CD, and version control.
  • Collaborate with Product Management to translate customer requirements into engineering deliverables and establish long-term technology roadmaps.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to software architecture and workflows, supporting product innovation within marine automation and offshore markets.
  • Work closely with operations, product, project management, and commercial teams to manage engineering schedules, resource allocation, technical risks, and project milestones.
  • Report engineering performance metrics and project status to senior leadership, supporting customer meetings, product demonstrations, factory acceptance testing, and commissioning activities.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with maritime regulations, industry standards, and quality management systems, supporting design reviews, certification, and regulatory approvals.
  • Participate in root-cause investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of progressive engineering experience, with at least 3+ years leading software engineering teams or technical organizations.
  • Strong background in embedded software, industrial controls, automation systems, or real-time applications.
  • Proven experience managing complex engineering projects from concept through deployment.
  • Preferred experience in marine, offshore, oil & gas, industrial automation, robotics, aerospace, defense, or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of vessel automation systems, dynamic positioning, propulsion controls, or mission-critical control platforms is advantageous.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams including software, electrical, controls, and systems engineers.
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline is a plus.
  • Up to 20% domestic and international travel, including vessel visits, sea trials, customer meetings, and project support.
