What are some common challenges faced by offensive security engineers on the job?

Offensive Security Engineers often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving threats, maintaining deep technical knowledge across various technologies, and identifying vulnerabilities in large or complex systems. They must balance rigorous testing with minimal disruption to live systems, which requires careful planning and coordination with other teams. Additionally, translating technical findings into actionable recommendations that are understandable to both technical and non-technical stakeholders is a key part of the role. These challenges make adaptability, continuous learning, and strong communication skills especially important in this field.

What does an offensive security engineer do?

An Offensive Security Engineer is responsible for identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in systems, networks, and applications to assess an organization's security posture. They conduct penetration testing, simulate real-world cyber attacks, and provide recommendations to strengthen defenses. Their work helps organizations proactively detect and mitigate security risks before malicious hackers can exploit them. They often use tools like Metasploit, Burp Suite, and custom scripts to test security controls.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offensive security engineer?

Offensive Security Engineers need expertise in penetration testing, vulnerability assessment, networking, programming, and a solid understanding of security best practices, typically supported by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Metasploit, Burp Suite, Kali Linux, and certifications such as OSCP or CEH is highly valued. Autonomous Solutions

Logan, UT • On-site

Full-time

Job description

At ASI, we are revolutionizing industries with state-of-the-art autonomous robotics solutions. Within the fields of agriculture, construction, landscaping, and logistics, we deliver technologies that enhance safety, productivity, and efficiency. With our core values of Simplicity, Safety, Transparency, Humility, Attention to Detail and Growth guiding everything we do, we're shaping the future of automation in dynamic markets.

This position is a W2 contract employee role with ASI for a defined project period, offering the stability of W2 employment along with access to benefits while you support our autonomous technology programs. As a contract employee, you'll work in a fast-moving, collaborative environment alongside engineers and product teams to help advance practical robotics solutions in the field.

As a Security Engineer IV, you will lead penetration testing and red team operations across Autonomous Solutions Inc's software, firmware, and network stacks. You will simulate adversarial attacks against autonomous vehicle platforms, identify and exploit vulnerabilities in C, C++, and C# codebases, and deliver findings that drive measurable security improvements. This is a project-based role supporting the initial development phase of our autonomous vehicle platforms, where your offensive security expertise will directly shape how our systems are hardened before deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute penetration tests against software, firmware, network, and embedded system targets.

  • Conduct red team exercises that simulate adversarial attack scenarios against autonomous platforms.

  • Identify and exploit vulnerabilities in C, C++, and C# codebases through targeted security assessments.

  • Assess network attack surfaces including TLS implementations, certificate handling, and encrypted protocols.

  • Develop detailed findings, exploit chains, and remediation recommendations for engineering teams.

  • Operate offensive security tooling including exploit frameworks, SAST, DAST, and fuzzing platforms.

  • Validate remediations through re-testing to confirm fixes hold against known attack techniques.

  • Support evidence collection and audit preparation for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 assessments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of experience in penetration testing, red team operations, or offensive security.

  • Hands-on experience testing software written in C, C++, and C#.

  • Proficiency with offensive security tools such as Metasploit, Burp Suite, or similar frameworks.

  • Working knowledge of exploit techniques including memory corruption, privilege escalation, and lateral movement.

  • Familiarity with network attack vectors including TLS weaknesses, PKI misconfigurations, and protocol vulnerabilities.

  • Scripting experience in Python, Bash, or similar for exploit automation and tooling.

  • Familiarity with hardware security primitives such as Secure Boot, TPMs, or HSMs.

  • Relevant certifications such as OSCP, GPEN, GWAPT, or CEH preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for extended periods.

  • Ability to operate a computer and other office productivity equipment continuously.

  • Ability to communicate and exchange information in person, via phone, and through electronic means.

  • Ability to traverse office, lab, data center, and field environments as required.
