How much do off grid engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for off grid engineer in the United States is $115,864.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $83,000.00 and $151,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does an off grid engineer do?

An Off Grid Engineer designs, implements, and maintains systems that provide power, water, and other utilities independent of public infrastructure. Their work often involves renewable energy sources like solar, wind, or hydro power, as well as battery storage and energy management systems. Off Grid Engineers assess site conditions, develop sustainable solutions, and ensure reliable operation for homes, businesses, or communities located in remote areas. They play a critical role in promoting energy independence and sustainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an off grid engineer?

To thrive as an Off Grid Engineer, you need expertise in electrical and renewable energy engineering, system design, and installation, often supported by a relevant engineering degree or certification. Familiarity with solar and wind power systems, battery storage technologies, and energy management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help you address unique site challenges and collaborate with clients or teams. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable, efficient, and sustainable off-grid energy solutions in diverse environments.

What are some common challenges off grid engineers face when designing and maintaining remote energy systems?

Off Grid Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to resources and unpredictable weather conditions, which can affect both system design and ongoing maintenance. Working in remote locations requires careful planning for equipment transport, installation, and troubleshooting, often with minimal onsite support. Additionally, ensuring reliable energy supply with variable renewable sources (like solar or wind) requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability to local conditions. Collaborative communication with clients, local contractors, and other engineers is essential to address unique site-specific needs and provide long-term solutions.

What is the difference between Off Grid Engineer vs Renewable Energy Technician?

AspectOff Grid EngineerRenewable Energy Technician
CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in solar/wind systemsTechnical certifications, solar/wind system training
Work EnvironmentDesigning and installing off-grid systems, fieldworkMaintaining and troubleshooting renewable systems, fieldwork
Industry UsageRenewable energy projects, off-grid solutionsSolar/wind system installation and repair

Off Grid Engineers focus on designing and implementing complete off-grid energy solutions, often requiring engineering degrees and system design expertise. Renewable Energy Technicians primarily handle installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of renewable systems. While both roles work in renewable energy, Off Grid Engineers are more involved in system planning and design, whereas Technicians focus on operational support.

Position Type: Full-Time | Experience Level: Experienced / Mid-Level or Above

About Susitna Energy Solutions

Susitna Energy Solutions is an Alaska-based renewable and off-grid energy company specializing in solar PV, battery storage, inverter systems, generators, heating solutions, and complete off-grid power systems. Our projects range from cabins and remote residences to commercial facilities and rural Alaska applications. The nature of our work requires employees who are technically capable, resourceful, highly organized, comfortable working independently, and able to adapt to changing project conditions.

We are seeking an experienced PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician who combines strong technical ability with excellent customer service, computer proficiency, organization, time management, and project coordination skills. This is not an entry-level position.

Position Overview

The PV & Off-Grid Power Systems Technician will support the design, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and technical support of solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, generator, and related off-grid energy systems. The ideal candidate can effectively manage their own workload, stay organized across multiple projects and customers, prioritize changing demands, and complete both field and administrative responsibilities without requiring constant oversight.

  • Solar and off-grid system design
  • Field installation, commissioning, service, and troubleshooting
  • Technical support and customer communication
  • Project coordination and job preparation
  • Computer-based programming, monitoring, and documentation
  • Scheduling, organization, prioritization, and follow-through

Solar PV & Off-Grid System Design
  • Evaluate customer electrical loads, usage patterns, site conditions, and energy requirements.
  • Design and size solar PV, battery storage, inverter/charger, charge controller, and generator-integrated systems.
  • Perform load calculations and energy-use assessments.
  • Size PV arrays, battery banks, inverter/chargers, charge controllers, conductors, overcurrent protection, and related balance-of-system components.
  • Understand and work with 12V, 24V, and 48V DC battery-based systems.
  • Interpret equipment specifications, wiring diagrams, manuals, and electrical drawings.
  • Develop system layouts, equipment lists, bills of materials, and project documentation.
  • Evaluate existing systems and recommend repairs, upgrades, or replacement options.
  • Design systems with consideration for Alaska's climate, seasonal solar resource, remote logistics, generator integration, and customer requirements.

Installation, Commissioning & Technical Service
  • Install, configure, commission, troubleshoot, and maintain solar PV and battery-based power systems.
Page Break
  • Work with PV modules, charge controllers, batteries, inverter/chargers, monitoring equipment, disconnects, breakers, communications equipment, and balance-of-system components.
