Must Haves:

  • Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) Certification
  • 2+ years of experience working in a cancer registry or oncology data environment.
  • Experience abstracting cancer cases, including diagnosis, treatment, staging, and outcomes data.
  • Associate's degree
  • Experience working within electronic medical records (EMRs) and registry databases.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office word processing and graphics
  • Knowledge of coding systems and staging standards such as FORDS, Collaborative Staging, Multiple Primary & Histology Rules, ICD-O coding, AJCC TNM staging, SEER, and EOD
  • Strong communication skills/ability to work as a team player
  • Ability to work without direct supervision

  • Completion of medical terminology and anatomy & physiology college-level courses
  • Experience gathering treatment information from multiple facilities, physician offices, and outside organizations.

Job Description:

A major healthcare system in Georgia is seeking an experienced Oncology Data Specialist II (ODS) to support the organization's cancer registry program. This individual will be responsible for accurately abstracting, staging, coding, and maintaining cancer patient data while ensuring compliance with Commission on Cancer (CoC), Georgia Cancer Registry, and National Cancer Database (NCDB) standards. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented oncology data professional with strong knowledge of cancer registry operations, abstracting, case finding, follow-up, and quality assurance processes. Active ODS certification is required.

Day-to-Day:

  • Abstract and maintain complete and accurate records for reportable benign and malignant cancer cases using established cancer registry standards and guidelines.
  • Review medical records, pathology reports, diagnostic studies, physician documentation, and treatment records to collect and document cancer-related data.
  • Assign and apply appropriate coding and staging methodologies, including ICD-O, AJCC TNM, Multiple Primary & Histology Rules, SEER, and EOD guidelines.
  • Ensure data quality and regulatory compliance through timely abstract completion, edit checks, and quality review activities.
  • Conduct case finding activities to identify reportable cancer cases utilizing multiple data sources, electronic reports, and diagnostic coding information.
  • Perform follow-up activities and research missing treatment information by collaborating with providers, clinics, hospitals, and external facilities.
  • Maintain cancer registry databases in accordance with Commission on Cancer, Georgia Cancer Registry, and NCDB requirements.
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives, data audits, and continuous improvement efforts to support cancer program accreditation and reporting standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with physicians, clinical staff, and internal stakeholders to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
