What is an ocean explorer?

Ocean explorers are scientists, researchers, or adventurers who study and investigate the world's oceans. They use specialized equipment like submersibles, remotely operated vehicles, and sonar mapping to discover new marine species, map the seafloor, and learn about underwater ecosystems. Their work helps us understand the ocean's role in Earth's climate, biodiversity, and resources, and often leads to exciting discoveries about our planet's last great frontier.

What are some of the main challenges ocean explorers face when conducting underwater research?

Ocean explorers often encounter challenges such as unpredictable weather conditions, limited underwater visibility, and the technical difficulties of operating specialized equipment like submersibles and remotely operated vehicles. In addition, working at great depths can pose physical and psychological stresses, requiring thorough training and strict safety protocols. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including marine biologists, engineers, and data analysts, is also essential to overcome these obstacles and ensure the success of research missions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ocean explorer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Ocean Explorer, you need a strong background in marine science, oceanography, or related fields, often supported by advanced degrees and field research experience. Proficiency in using submersibles, sonar mapping systems, SCUBA equipment, and data analysis software is typically required. Curiosity, problem-solving, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for adapting to challenging environments and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities are vital for conducting safe, effective research and advancing our understanding of ocean ecosystems.

How do you become an ocean explorer?

To become an ocean explorer, individuals typically need a background in marine science, oceanography, or related fields, often requiring a bachelor's degree at minimum and advanced degrees for research roles. Gaining experience through internships, certifications in scuba diving or submersible operation, and developing skills in data collection and analysis are also important for pursuing this career.

How much do ocean explorers get paid?

Ocean explorers' salaries vary widely depending on experience, funding, and the organization they work for. Entry-level positions may start around $40,000 to $60,000 annually, while experienced explorers or those working for government agencies or private companies can earn over $100,000 per year. Specialized skills, certifications, and access to advanced equipment can influence compensation levels.

Quantum US

Englewood, CO

Full-time

Re-posted 13 days ago

Job description

Quantum Corp. leads the world in helping users collaboratively solve some of the world's hardest computer challenges. Whether its wrangling Petabytes of data for cutting edge movie production, managing global content production workflows, exploring new sources of energy, or managing oceans of content and blending collaborative high-speed workflows with cutting-edge object storage, Quantum has the tools and technology to help you engineer the solution that works now - and preserves your work for decades to come. You are applying to an exceptional team that contributes to enhancing our position as a proven global expert in data management.

Quantum is seeking an experienced Product Manager to lead product strategy, roadmap development, and end-to-end lifecycle management for the ActiveScale object storage platform. ActiveScale is Quantum’s large-scale, high-durability object storage solution designed for data lakes, AI/ML pipelines, HPC, media archives, and long-term unstructured data preservation. As Product Manager, you will define the vision, translate customer needs into requirements, work closely with Engineering on execution, and ensure the product’s success in highly demanding enterprise and cloud-integrated environments.

Key Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Market Leadership

  • Define and evolve the long-term vision for ActiveScale, including scale, performance, data durability, metadata architecture, hybrid-cloud workflows, and cost-optimized storage tiers.
  • Identify and validate new market opportunities across AI/ML storage pipelines, media workflows, HPC, analytics, large-scale archiving, and S3-compatible cloud workloads.
  • Monitor competitive trends (cloud object stores, on-prem object systems, distributed storage architectures) to guide market positioning.

Roadmap Definition & Execution

  • Own and maintain the ActiveScale roadmap, balancing customer needs, competitive pressures, and engineering capacity.
  • Prioritize features using customer input, business value, telemetry insights, and technical feasibility.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to determine release scope, detailed requirements, acceptance criteria, and milestones.

Requirements & Product Design

  • Gather feedback from customers, partners, and field teams to translate real-world use cases into clear product requirements.
  • Write detailed MRDs, PRDs, user stories, and acceptance criteria for major enhancements (e.g., S3 API expansion, durability/erasure coding improvements, metadata scaling, observability advances, security and multi-tenant enhancements).
  • Partner with architects, QA, and UX teams to develop intuitive management workflows, dashboards, and API-driven integrations.

Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Act as the primary interface between Engineering, Sales, Support, Marketing, Operations, and Executive teams for all ActiveScale initiatives.
  • Work with Customer Support and L3 Engineering to identify recurring issues, drive product quality improvements, and ensure supportability in large deployments.
  • Collaborate with Sales Engineering to provide competitive guidance, develop solution architectures, and support strategic customer engagements.

Customer, Partner & Ecosystem Engagement

  • Engage directly with enterprise customers, ISVs, and cloud partners to gather insights, validate roadmap features, and support major deployments.
  • Lead roadmap presentations, customer briefings, and technical workshops for key accounts.
  • Build strong relationships within the object storage ecosystem, including S3-compatible software and workflow partners.

Lifecycle Management

  • Manage the product lifecycle from concept to GA, through maintenance releases, refresh cycles, and EOL planning.
  • Contribute to pricing, licensing models, capacity planning, and hardware platform selection.
  • Use field telemetry, sizing data, and customer feedback to guide continuous improvements.

Go-to-Market & Launch Ownership

  • Work with Marketing to develop product messaging, competitive content, launch materials, and sales enablement collateral.
  • Provide training, competitive analysis, and sales tools to Sales and Channel teams.
  • Support major product launches, release communications, and public announcements.

Required Qualifications

  • 15+ years of product management experience in enterprise storage, cloud infrastructure, distributed systems, or object storage technologies.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Object storage architectures, S3 APIs, metadata models, erasure coding, and multi-site replication
    • Linux-based distributed systems, clustering, network design, and large-scale deployments
    • Hybrid-cloud workflows and integration with AWS/Azure/GCP
    • Data-intensive workloads (HPC, AI/ML, media archiving, analytics, scientific computing)
  • Proven ability to gather customer requirements and convert them into actionable product plans.
  • Experience working with software engineering teams through full product lifecycles.
  • Excellent communication, executive-level presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Willing and able to come into our office in Centennial, CO at least 3x/week (Tuesday - Thursday 10am - 4pm core office hours).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on knowledge of ActiveScale or similar object storage systems (Ceph, MinIO, ECS, Scality, Cloudian, etc.).
  • Background in distributed system design, large-scale storage architectures, or cloud-native infrastructure.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, containerized workloads, or microservices.
  • Technical degree in CS, EE, or similar field (or equivalent engineering experience).
  • Certifications in cloud, product management, or storage technologies.

Soft Skills

  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Customer-centric mindset with a passion for long-term data management.
  • Ability to lead through influence and work cross-functionally across technical and business teams.
  • Comfortable engaging with executives, architects, customers, and engineering teams.
