What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

In the field of observability and related tech roles, senior positions such as principal engineers, solutions architects, or engineering managers at large tech companies can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, especially with bonuses and stock options. High-level roles requiring extensive experience, specialized skills in cloud platforms, monitoring tools, and leadership are more likely to offer such compensation. These roles often demand advanced certifications and a proven track record in scalable system design and performance optimization.

What jobs are good for observant people?

Jobs suitable for observant people include roles such as security analysts, quality control inspectors, and surveillance operators, where attention to detail and vigilance are essential. These positions often require strong focus, pattern recognition, and the ability to notice subtle changes or anomalies, sometimes utilizing tools like monitoring software or surveillance equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Observability position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Observability role, you need a strong background in monitoring, alerting, logging, and analyzing system performance, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk, and experience with cloud platforms and scripting languages is crucial. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with cross-functional engineering and operations teams. These capabilities are essential to ensure system reliability, quickly detect issues, and maintain seamless digital experiences.

What is an Observability job?

An Observability job focuses on ensuring the performance, reliability, and health of software systems by collecting, analyzing, and visualizing telemetry data such as logs, metrics, and traces. Professionals in this field work with monitoring tools, distributed tracing, and alerting systems to detect and troubleshoot issues proactively. They collaborate with engineering and operations teams to improve system visibility, reduce downtime, and enhance overall system performance.

Is observability a good career?

Observability is a growing field focused on monitoring and analyzing system performance using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch. It offers opportunities in DevOps, site reliability engineering, and cloud environments, often requiring skills in scripting, data analysis, and infrastructure management. The role is in demand across industries that prioritize system reliability and performance.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in high-demand fields such as software engineering, data engineering, and site reliability engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, specialized skills, and stock options. These roles often require advanced technical expertise, certifications, and leadership responsibilities within large technology companies or successful startups.

What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities of someone in an Observability role?

In an Observability role, your daily tasks often include designing and maintaining monitoring dashboards, configuring alerts, analyzing system logs, and working closely with development and operations teams to troubleshoot issues. You'll proactively identify areas of improvement to increase system reliability, document monitoring strategies, and support incident response efforts. Collaboration is key, as you may participate in post-incident reviews and help drive architectural improvements based on the data you collect. The role is dynamic and requires a proactive approach to ensure systems stay healthy and downtime is minimized.

Job description

Senior/Staff Site Reliability Engineer, Platforms

Location: Nashville, TN (Hybrid, 3 days in office)

Compensation: $140,000 - $210,000 base salary

Eligibility: U.S. residents only

About Us

At 360 Privacy, we build proactive digital security tools to protect high-risk individuals, from senior executives to public figures and their families. Our platform removes personal data exposure across the open web, deep web, and dark web through a combination of human expertise and large-scale automation.

Trusted by 40 of the Fortune 100, we're scaling rapidly and investing heavily in our Platform team, the infrastructure that powers reliable, observable systems across our engineering organization.

Who We're Looking For

We're hiring a Senior or Staff SRE to join our Platform team. This is a high-impact role on a small, capable team (1 Manager + 2 ICs) where you'll have significant ownership over the infrastructure that enables faster software delivery with fewer incidents.

You've spent years building and operating production Kubernetes clusters. You understand observability deeply and have strong opinions about what makes systems debuggable. You've managed ElasticSearch at scale and know the difference between logs that help and logs that just cost money. You think in terms of infrastructure as code and believe Terraform plans should be boring.

You've been paged, you've debugged under pressure, and you've built systems that stay up when things go wrong.

What You'll Do

  • Operate and administer Kubernetes clusters supporting production, development, and local environments
  • Own ElasticSearch and Kibana administration, including ingestion pipelines and observability adoption across applications
  • Author and review Terraform changes to support engineering initiatives
  • Design and implement CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, and Kubernetes
  • Educate and inform developers on tools and best practices through demos, documentation, and evangelism
  • Participate in on-call rotation (team of 4)
  • Mentor and guide team members and influence platform direction through design reviews (Staff level)

This role has significant infrastructure impact and requires strong technical judgment alongside hands-on operational work.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional experience in SRE, DevOps, or Platform Engineering
  • Deep expertise with Kubernetes, particularly EKS
  • Strong experience with ElasticSearch and observability tooling
  • Proficiency with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices
  • Solid understanding of AWS IAM and cloud security fundamentals
  • Low ego and excellent written communication skills
  • This role requires advanced proficiency in English to effectively communicate complex information with team members and stakeholders, and to complete job-related documentation and collaboration tasks. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to providing reasonable accommodations where applicable.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with ArgoCD and GitOps workflows
  • AWS RDS administration experience
  • Python scripting and automation
  • Background in privacy tech, security, or other regulated environments

Compensation

This role has a target base salary range of $140,000-$210,000. Final compensation is based on demonstrated experience, interview performance, and scope of impact.

  • Senior: $140,000 - $180,000
  • Staff: $180,000 - $210,000
  • Bonus and equity participation

Why Join Us

  • Impact: Build infrastructure that protects real people from real-world risks
  • Culture: High ownership, low-ego engineering team that values correctness, reliability, and clarity
  • Longevity: Influence the direction of a core platform built to last years, not quarters
  • Growth: Ongoing learning and conference opportunities
  • Unique perk: Digital privacy protection for you and your family
