Object Detection Intern information

What does an Object Detection Intern do?

An Object Detection Intern typically assists in developing and testing machine learning models that identify and locate objects within images or videos. They work with datasets, annotate images, train neural networks, and evaluate model performance using metrics like precision and recall. Interns often collaborate with data scientists and engineers to improve algorithms and deploy real-time object detection systems. This role helps interns gain hands-on experience with computer vision tools and deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Object Detection Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Object Detection Intern, you need a solid background in computer vision, machine learning, and programming languages like Python, often supported by coursework or a related degree. Familiarity with frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV, as well as experience with object detection models like YOLO or Faster R-CNN, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you stand out in collaborative research and development environments. These competencies are crucial for building accurate models, efficiently solving technical challenges, and contributing meaningfully to the team's projects.

What are the typical projects and tasks an Object Detection Intern might work on during their internship?

As an Object Detection Intern, you will typically work on tasks such as annotating and preprocessing datasets, training and evaluating deep learning models (like YOLO or Faster R-CNN), and experimenting with different architectures to improve detection accuracy. You'll often collaborate closely with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and software developers to integrate your models into larger systems. Interns may also be involved in error analysis and iterative model improvement, providing hands-on experience with the full machine learning workflow in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Job description

Computer Vision Intern - Data Labeling & Annotation
Type: Temporary
Duration: 6 months - 12 months
What You'll Gain
  • Exposure to the full CV pipeline, from raw data to deployed model
  • Mentorship from CV engineers working on production systems
  • Hands-on experience with YOLO, PyTorch, and modern annotation workflows
  • Concrete portfolio work - datasets, scripts, and model contributions - that translates directly to future ML/CV roles

What You'll Do
  • Annotate images and video for object detection (bounding boxes), segmentation (polygons/masks), and classification
  • Help refine labeling schemas and class taxonomies as edge cases come up
  • Write Python scripts to convert between annotation formats, validate label integrity, and generate dataset statistics
  • QA labels and surface systematic errors or ambiguous cases
  • Run baseline YOLO training experiments to evaluate dataset quality and identify labeling gaps
  • Document conventions and edge-case decisions

Required
  • Pursuing a degree in CS, EE, AI/ML, or related field
  • Working knowledge of Python and common CV libraries (NumPy, OpenCV)
  • Attention to detail and patience for precision work

Nice to Have
  • Hands-on experience with YOLO
  • Familiarity with PyTorch, segmentation masks, or model-assisted labeling workflows
