How much do o1 visa jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for o1 visa in the United States is $88,043.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $48,000.00 and $108,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an O1 visa?

An O1 Visa job is a position in the U.S. for individuals with extraordinary ability in science, education, business, athletics, or the arts. The O1 Visa is employer-sponsored, meaning a U.S. company must petition on behalf of the foreign worker. To qualify, applicants must provide evidence of outstanding achievements, such as awards, publications, or significant contributions to their field. The visa is initially granted for up to three years, with extensions available.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for an O1 visa?

The O1 Visa is not a job title but instead refers to a nonimmigrant visa category for individuals with extraordinary ability or achievement in fields such as science, education, business, athletics, or the arts. Applicants for O1 visas are expected to demonstrate advanced technical skills, significant documented accomplishments, and, ideally, recognition by peers in their field. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to navigate complex documentation processes can help in securing and maintaining visa status. These qualifications are crucial because the O1 visa process is competitive and requires clear proof of exceptional skills and professional recognition rather than just meeting baseline job requirements.

What types of employers sponsor candidates for O1 visas, and what should applicants expect during the sponsorship process?

Employers who sponsor O1 visas are generally organizations or institutions in fields where extraordinary expertise is needed, such as universities, research organizations, entertainment companies, and specialized businesses. The sponsorship process involves the employer submitting a petition to USCIS demonstrating that you meet relevant industry standards and have an established record of achievement. Applicants should expect to collaborate closely with their employer to gather documentation, evidence of accomplishments, and supporting reference letters as part of the petition. The process can be rigorous, so strong communication between you and the employer is vital for a successful application. Once granted, O1 visa holders often work in dynamic environments alongside other highly skilled professionals and may have opportunities to advance or extend their status based on ongoing performance.
