Job description

Job Summary:
The IT Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, maintenance, and support of all information systems and technology infrastructure at Cedar County Memorial Hospital a Critical Access Hospital (CAH). The goal of this position is to ensure efficient, secure, and modern IT systems that support the hospital's clinical, administrative, and operational needs. This role manages the day-to-day operations of IT services while also leading strategic initiatives to optimize technology's role in patient care, compliance, and business sustainability.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Technical Operations & Infrastructure
• Maintain and improve all IT systems including networks, servers, PCs, phones, Wi-Fi, and security systems
• Install and configure workstations, peripherals (printers, routers), and software
• Ensure optimal performance of local and wide-area networks (LAN/WAN)
• Monitor servers, firewalls, and systems for uptime, stability, and vulnerabilities
• Perform routine data backups and disaster recovery procedures
• Provide infrastructure hardware and software in support of EHRs
System Support & Troubleshooting
• Respond to and resolve Help Desk tickets in a timely manner
• Troubleshoot hardware, software, and network issues
• Replace or repair faulty components, debug systems, and perform virus scans
• Provide remote or on-site support as needed
User Support & Training
• Train and orient staff on IT tools, best practices, and new software
• Create user guides and reference materials
• Foster IT literacy and cybersecurity awareness across departments
Cybersecurity & Compliance
• Ensure all systems meet HIPAA, HITECH, and CMS regulations
• Implement and maintain appropriate access controls and security protocols
• Manage antivirus, patch management, and data privacy policies
• Support external audits, regulatory surveys, and incident response
Planning & Administration
• Maintain accurate IT documentation (inventory, licenses, configurations, maintenance logs)
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies, systems, and tools
• Monitor approved IT budget and coordinate purchases of new equipment or software
• Manage or oversee the management of all IT projects
• Oversee third-party vendors and contractors
Website & Communications
• Maintain facility intranet and public website
• Support telehealth infrastructure and integration of new digital health tools
Non-Essential Duties:
• Participate in other duties as assigned by leadership
• Support performance improvement and any projects with a technology component
• Serve as back-up for other departmental roles as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• In-depth knowledge of healthcare IT systems, including MEDITECH
• Proficiency with Windows Server, Office 365, networking, virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), databases, reporting, and information security solutions
• Knowledge of HIPAA security rules, cybersecurity practices, and compliance standards
• Demonstrates ability to solve problems; ability to appropriately confront issues
• Strong leadership, interpersonal, and customer service skills
• Effective written and verbal communication, and listening skills
• Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure and prioritize support requests
• Strong time management skills
• Demonstrated commitment to patient-first, mission-driven service delivery
Qualifications:
• Education:
o Associate degree in IS, Computer Science, or related field required
o Bachelor's Degree preferred
• Experience:
o Minimum 2-3 years in a healthcare IT role, preferably within a hospital or CAH
o Hands-on experience with system administration, troubleshooting, and help desk operations
• Certifications (preferred):
o CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+
o Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), MCSA, or equivalent
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
• Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Work involves standing, walking, bending, and working in confined spaces
• Must be available for occasional after-hours support or on-call duties
• Work performed in temperature-controlled office/server environments and occasional offsite clinic support
Customer Service Expectations:
• Deliver responsive, respectful, and accurate service in a timely manner
• Prioritize requests based on urgency and clinical impact
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions
• Promote a positive, solutions-oriented culture in support of hospital mission
