DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for providing pre- and post-transplant patient care in the Lung Transplant Program. Provides clinical assistance and support in treating and managing inpatients and outpatients, and acts as a key member of the multidisciplinary transplant team. Evaluates patients pre- and post-transplant, primarily in the outpatient setting, including history and physical, patient preparation, procedures, and management. Solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician, fellows, and residents.
The NP is a consultant and liaison for patients and their families with attending physicians, house staff, social service staff, financial and administrative staff, inpatient nursing, and community organizations. Provides teaching to patients, staff, and community organizations. Designated expert resource person on the basis of advanced clinical expertise in patient care for lung transplant patients. Assigned more complex cases requiring the use of advanced skills and typically works with greater independence.

This position will support and provide clinical care in both inpatient and outpatient environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.
  • Current State of California Registered Nurse (RN) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) License, State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number.
  • Current Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) certification, or Adult-Gerontology Critical Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) certification.
  • BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six months of hire date.
  • DEA license.
  • A minimum of one (1) year and six (6) months of inpatient and outpatient NP experience. Experience must include Solid Organ Transplant or Advanced Lung Disease, which may be met through clinical rotation or practicum.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal, and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.
  • Proven ability to manage comprehensive patient care across both inpatient and outpatient settings, with a strong emphasis on clinical decision-making, care coordination, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, emotional resilience, and sound clinical judgment in high-acuity and fast-paced environments.
  • Experience leading or actively participating in Quality Improvement (QI) and/or Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives aimed at advancing clinical outcomes, operational workflows, or patient experience.
  • Ability to perform various medical procedures, including but not limited to chest tube removal, arterial line and central line placement, diagnostic studies, and therapeutic modalities.
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.
  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.
  • Knowledge of all types of treatment and modalities necessary for patient care and well-being, and ability to write orders regarding execution of inpatient and outpatient plans of treatment.
  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.
  • Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care management.
  • Knowledge necessary for instructing house staff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Moderate sedation experience, preferably one or more years.
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish.
  • Epic and Phoenix experience.
  • Lung Transplant NP experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, NP experience must be within the last two years.
  • Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
  • This position may involve a weekend rotation and will take call.
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $176,624 - $247,157 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $84.59 - $118.37
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
