What is an NVH engineering manager?

NVH Engineering Managers are professionals who oversee teams responsible for Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) analysis and control in vehicles or mechanical products. They coordinate and manage efforts to identify, assess, and mitigate unwanted noise and vibrations to enhance product quality and customer comfort. Their role involves supervising engineers, collaborating with design and manufacturing teams, and ensuring that NVH targets are met throughout the development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an NVH engineering manager?

To thrive as an NVH Engineering Manager, you need a robust background in mechanical or automotive engineering, extensive knowledge of Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) principles, and experience leading engineering teams. Familiarity with tools such as LMS Test.Lab, Brüel & Kjær systems, and simulation software like MATLAB or ANSYS, as well as relevant certifications, is common. Strong leadership, project management, and effective cross-functional communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure product quality, efficient problem-solving, and the successful delivery of quieter, more comfortable vehicles.

How does an NVH engineering manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to address noise, vibration, and harshness issues in automotive projects?

As an NVH Engineering Manager, you’ll frequently work alongside design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to identify and resolve noise, vibration, and harshness concerns throughout the product development cycle. This involves reviewing test data, participating in design reviews, and facilitating communication between departments to implement NVH solutions that align with performance and cost targets. Close collaboration with suppliers and program managers is also common to ensure that NVH standards are met in both prototype and production phases. Effective teamwork and strong communication skills are key to ensuring smooth integration of NVH improvements without impacting other vehicle attributes.
