What does a Lead NVH Engineer do?

A Lead NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) Engineer is responsible for overseeing the development and optimization of a vehicle’s acoustic and vibration characteristics. They lead teams in diagnosing, analyzing, and resolving issues related to noise, vibration, and harshness to enhance overall ride quality and comfort. Their work involves using simulation tools, testing in labs and on the road, and collaborating with design and engineering teams to implement effective solutions. The Lead NVH Engineer ensures that vehicles meet regulatory standards and customer expectations for quietness and smoothness.

How does a Lead NVH Engineer typically collaborate with other engineering teams during a vehicle development project?

As a Lead NVH Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, powertrain, chassis, and manufacturing engineers. Your role involves coordinating NVH testing, sharing data analysis, and recommending design modifications to minimize noise, vibration, and harshness. Effective communication is key, as you'll often lead meetings to align NVH targets with overall vehicle performance goals and work with suppliers to ensure components meet specifications. This collaborative environment is essential for ensuring high-quality vehicle acoustics and ride comfort.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lead NVH Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead NVH Engineer, you need expertise in acoustics, vibration analysis, and mechanical engineering principles, often supported by a degree in mechanical or automotive engineering. Proficiency with specialized tools like MATLAB, LMS Test.Lab, and sound measurement systems, as well as experience with CAE software, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, leadership capabilities, and effective communication skills help drive cross-functional teams and innovative solutions. These skills ensure optimal noise, vibration, and harshness performance in products, leading to improved customer satisfaction and competitive advantage.

Job description

Senior CAE Durability and NVH Engineer

A Senior CAE Durability and NVH Engineer focuses on vehicle-level durability and NVH CAE simulation across the full development lifecycle. The engineer will drive design decisions using simulation insights while balancing NVH, durability, safety, weight, and cost targets.

Responsibilities:

•    Lead NVH and durability CAE for full vehicle programs.

•    Build and maintain high-fidelity FEA models at vehicle and subsystem level.

•    Perform global stiffness, modal, frequency response, vibration, stress, and fatigue analyses.

•    Predict durability life and identify potential failure locations.

•    Optimize structural load paths for NVH and durability targets.

•    Support lightweighting through topology optimization and material selection.

•    Evaluate joints, welds, adhesives, and structural configurations.

•    Correlate CAE results with test data and improve model accuracy.

•    Provide clear simulation results and design recommendations.

•    Work with Design, Body, Trim, Manufacturing, and Program teams globally

Qualifications:

•    Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

•    8+ years of NVH and durability CAE experience in automotive.

•    Strong knowledge of structural dynamics and fatigue mechanics.

•    Experience with vehicle NVH and durability performance targets.

•    Ability to correlate simulation with physical testing.

•    Proficiency in Python, TCL, or similar scripting.

•    Experience with OptiStruct, Nastran, Abaqus, LS Dyna, nCode, FEMFAT.
