Functional Genomics Scientist 

As a Functional Genomics Scientist in the Genetics & Genomics organization within Plant Biotechnology at Bayer Crop Science R&D, you play a pivotal role in driving innovation across our discovery pipeline; You identify and validate molecular targets that are critical for plant pathology, yield, and nutrition, and you analyze the biological, chemical, and genetic properties of plants to enable the development of next-generation cultivars and agricultural solutions; You apply your expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, plant genetics, plant physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology to design and execute functional genomics strategies that inform new plant cultivars and agricultural methods; You may also explore insect neurochemistry and pheromones to support sustainable pest control approaches, contributing to Bayer's vision of health for all, hunger for none.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibilities of this role, Functional Genomics Scientist, are to:

  • Deliver high-quality gene expression data within defined timelines, including qRT-PCR, RNA-seq, and custom assay development;
  • Interpret complex project requirements and independently design scientifically robust functional genomics assays to meet research objectives;
  • Develop and communicate clear, data-driven technical reports with well-founded conclusions and actionable recommendations for stakeholders and cross-functional partners;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and proactive problem solver, addressing technical challenges, providing technical guidance, and enabling project success across the pipeline;
  • Contribute to functional genomics strategy, including workflow automation, evaluation of emerging technologies, and continuous improvement of pipeline capabilities;
  • Collaborate effectively across teams and disciplines, demonstrating flexibility, strong partnership, and inclusive ways of working to advance project goals and deliver impactful innovations.
WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

Required Qualifications:
  • PhD with relevant experience, or MS with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or BS with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a related scientific discipline;
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with independent execution of gene expression assays and RNA sample extraction from diverse tissue types;
  • Strong foundation in genomics, with the ability to design and execute assays, analyze data, and translate results into clear scientific conclusions and actionable recommendations;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving capability, with the ability to provide technical guidance and influence stakeholders in a cross-functional environment;
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to partner effectively across diverse, cross-functional teams and contribute to an inclusive, respectful workplace.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience with spatial or single-cell transcriptomics technologies;
  • Experience working with automated laboratory equipment, such as liquid handling systems;
  • Understanding of bioinformatics, IT systems, and data analysis or visualization tools;
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $78,640.00 - $117,960.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or incentive compensation (if relevant).  Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc..  This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
