POSITION DESCRIPTION


Title:   STEM Specialist 

Reports To: Clubhouse Director

Wage:  $18 - $21/hr

Status: Part Time, hourly up to 25 hours per week 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  

  • The STEM Specialist is responsible for implementing and overseeing the delivery of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Nutrition programming. The STEM Specialist position is a full time position and is considered to be over 30 hours per week.  Special events may require additional hours after regular club hours or during weekends. The STEM Specialist is expected to work alongside the curriculum team to meet the goals of the BGCML strategic plan. 


KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Prepare Youth for Success

  • Plan and oversee the administration of designated STEM & Nutrition programs that are consistent with organizational goals and mission across all operating club sites.

  • Oversee the day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals.

  • Ensure that members are encouraged and engaged in a variety of STEM & Nutrition program areas/activities and receive instruction to develop skills in STEM & Nutrition program areas specific to grant and BGCA initiatives.

  • Demonstrate leadership to ensure conduct, safety and development of club members.

  • Promote and create program participation.


Program Development and Implementation

  • Establish and maintain program goals and settings that ensure the health and safety of members. Ensure that staff understand and effectively communicate standards of program; that program areas are safe, well ventilated and well lit; and that site and school equipment is well maintained.

  • Ensure the evaluation of programs on a continual basis and respond to member needs, addressing their gender and cultural diversity.

  • Propose to direct supervisor program and activity expenditures within the approved budget.

  • Plan and implement programming for quarterly family engagement events at all sites.

  • Plan and implement curriculum for community groups (ie field trips, rentals, etc).


Supervision

  • Allocate and monitor work assigned to program volunteers, community partners, and program staff, providing ongoing feedback and regular appraisal. 

  • Work with direct supervisor to identify and support training and development opportunities for assigned volunteers and staff, as well as monitor impact of training. 

  • Perform proper and timely record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted, breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any programs/issues.

  • Ensure productive and effective performance by all program staff and volunteers.


Additional Responsibilities

  • May support special programs and/or events (i.e. Youth of the Year and Awards Programs), and/or participate in the implementation of other site activities as necessary.

  • Consult with direct supervisor concerning member and site issues as well as growth opportunities. 

  • All other duties as assigned. 


Relationships

  • Internal: Maintain close, daily contact with site staff (professional and volunteer), site members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, and advise/counsel.

  • External: Maintain contact with external community groups, schools, members’ parents and others to ensure a safe and collaborative approach for the success of our youth.


SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in related fields from an accredited college/university is preferred, or 2 years of educational background, and 2 years of professional work experience.

  • A minimum of 1 year experience as a youth educator, or a similar role 

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Group leadership skills, including an understanding of group dynamics.

  • Demonstrated organizational, staff and project management abilities & outcomes

  • Must maintain up to date CPR & First Aid certifications


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods of time.

  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and proper automobile insurance.
