Job Title: Scientist-LNP Formulation

Location: San Diego, CA 92111 (Onsite)

Duration: 03+ Month Contract

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Scientist I to join the Formulation team in San Diego, CA. This is a hands-on laboratory position focused on the formulation and optimization of targeted and non-targeted lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for nucleic acid delivery.

The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of hands-on LNP formulation experience, including encapsulation of nucleic acids such as mRNA, siRNA, or DNA. The candidate should be comfortable working in a laboratory environment, analyzing experimental data, and collaborating with senior scientists and cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate and optimize lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and targeted LNPs (tLNPs) for nucleic acid delivery.
  • Perform nucleic acid encapsulation for mRNA, siRNA, DNA, and related applications.
  • Execute Design of Experiments (DoE) studies to evaluate LNP compositions and processing parameters.
  • Characterize LNP formulations using techniques such as Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Zeta potential, and Ribogreen assays.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data to the formulation team.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support formulation requests and research activities.
  • Support downstream formulation activities, including cryoprotection, scale-up, and stability studies, as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and experimental documentation.
  • Support routine laboratory activities including inventory management, supply ordering, buffer preparation, and autoclaving.
  • Work under the guidance of senior formulation scientists while maintaining high standards for data quality and reproducibility.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline with 4+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with 1+ years of industry experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on laboratory experience in LNP formulation.
  • Hands-on experience with nucleic acid encapsulation, including mRNA, siRNA, or DNA.
  • Experience with LNP characterization techniques, particularly:
    • Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS)
    • Zeta potential
    • Ribogreen assays
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data analysis and presentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to generate reproducible experimental data.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with targeted LNP (tLNP) formulation.
  • Experience preparing mAb-, Fab-, ScFv-, or VHH-coated LNPs.
  • Experience with immune-cell delivery.
  • Experience using JMP, GraphPad Prism, or similar statistical/data analysis software.
  • Experience with DoE-based formulation screening and optimization.
  • Experience with LNP scale-up, stability, or cryoprotection studies.
