What is nuclear power security?

Nuclear power security refers to the measures and protocols put in place to protect nuclear power plants and their materials from theft, sabotage, terrorism, and other malicious threats. It involves physical security, cybersecurity, personnel vetting, and emergency response planning to ensure the safety and integrity of nuclear facilities. Security professionals in this field monitor for potential threats, enforce strict access controls, and coordinate with government agencies to comply with national and international regulations. The goal is to prevent unauthorized access and safeguard both the public and the environment from potential hazards.

What are some unique challenges faced by security personnel working at a nuclear power facility?

Security personnel at nuclear power plants face unique challenges due to the critical importance of protecting sensitive infrastructure and materials. They must maintain heightened vigilance against potential security threats, regularly participate in drills and training for emergency situations, and strictly adhere to regulatory protocols. The work environment is highly structured, with clear chains of command and close collaboration with plant operators, law enforcement, and emergency response teams. This role demands strong situational awareness, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a commitment to ongoing professional development to keep pace with evolving security technologies and regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nuclear power security professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Nuclear Power Security, you need a strong background in physical security protocols, emergency response, and often a combination of military or law enforcement experience along with relevant security certifications. Familiarity with surveillance systems, access control technologies, and regulatory compliance standards (such as NRC guidelines) is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, situational awareness, and effective communication skills set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These competencies are critical to ensure the safety and security of nuclear facilities, personnel, and the surrounding community against potential threats.

What is the difference between Nuclear Power Security vs Nuclear Power Plant Operator?

Job description

Project Engineer - Nuclear Uprate
A Snapshot of Your Day
As a Project Engineer-Nuclear Uprate, you will play a pivotal role in delivering complex steam turbine modifications that enhance nuclear plant uprates and long-term performance. This position is highly collaborative and customer-facing, making it ideal for engineers who thrive on transforming detailed designs into successful field execution. You will engage directly with nuclear generation customers to review technical scopes, align project requirements, and ensure that our solutions not only meet contractual commitments but also exceed expectations. Internally, you will work closely with design engineering, project management, and manufacturing teams to bridge the gap between engineering intent and real-world execution.
A key aspect of your role will involve translating design engineering outputs and approved turbine modification details into safe, efficient, and effective field execution strategies. This includes evaluating installation methods, identifying potential risks, resolving execution challenges, and ensuring compliance with nuclear quality, safety, and regulatory standards. Throughout your day, you will balance technical rigor with practical problem-solving by reviewing engineering documentation, participating in cross-functional planning meetings, and supporting field execution decisions. If you are driven by complex engineering challenges and cross-functional teamwork, this role offers a unique opportunity to grow your expertise while contributing to impactful, high-visibility projects in the nuclear energy sector.
How You'll Make an Impact:
  • Support the successful delivery of complex nuclear uprate projects across engineering, manufacturing, and project execution.
  • Provide technical and project oversight for upgraded nuclear power plant equipment, including Low Pressure Turbines, High Pressure Turbines, Generators, Exciters, and related systems.
  • Plan, schedule, and participate in regular project reviews, including factory testing, factory visits, and customer witness points to ensure quality, schedule adherence, and contractual compliance.
  • Monitor engineering, manufacturing, and erection/commissioning milestones for assigned uprate contracts, proactively identifying risks and driving resolution.
  • Partner closely with the SEI Major Projects Group Project Manager to coordinate engineering deliverables, manufacturing activities, and overall project execution.
  • Support and coordinate retained components studies with engineering, project management, and implementation teams to ensure equipment outside the uprate contract scope is fully evaluated and not overlooked.
  • Develop training materials and lead technical training sessions to prepare the Nuclear organization for the execution of complex uprate projects.
  • Help drive innovation and continuous improvement, supporting solutions from concept development through implementation to enhance project outcomes and customer satisfaction.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience in the Power Generation Industry
  • Experience in Field Service, Project Management or Engineering
  • Nuclear uprate experience is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experienced writing presentations and briefings to Management
  • Knowledge of component design and manufacturing processes
  • Develop Tooling to Support Installation
  • Able to pass security background check and receive badge in a US Nuclear power plant
  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.
