Nuclear Material Handler Jobs (NOW HIRING)

PSD-3 is seeking a highly motivated First Line Manager to support Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) and Material Recovery and Recycling (MR&R) operations. Working in the Plutonium Supply and Disposition (PSD) Division, ARIES helps support monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile and conducting advanced research in numerous areas related to national security. MR&R provides nuclear material recovery and recycling efforts in support of the weapons production mission. Our primary function covers nuclear material recovery, recycling and disposition efforts with teams executing pit disassembly, metal conversion, oxide stabilization and processing, 3013 packaging, and analytical chemistry operations. The Manufacturing Manager 3, First Line Manager (FLM), will report to a Group Leader and will provide leadership, management, and oversight of the assigned team. The FLM will have the responsibility, authority and accountability to execute work that supports programmatic milestones and deliverables while setting the standards for professional behavior and operational effectiveness.

• Ensures administrative and operating procedures are current, understood, and adhered to before releasing work.


• Working with facility operations staff to execute work safely, securely, with quality, and in compliance with nuclear facility requirements.


• Ensures direct daily oversight of work, workers and the work environment. Accepting responsibility for the safety over people, equipment, and processes.


• Ongoing communications with line management reporting on work status, deliverables and commitments.


• Directing and overseeing work performed by employees including \"on the floor\" supervision.


• Planning, organizing, and defining strategic objectives.


• Establishing scope, schedule, resource need of team, overseeing performance management and ensuring worker qualification and authorization.


• Delivers quality products and\/or services; enforces adherence to quality standards; achieves balance between the need to meet both productivity goals and quality standards.


• Effective time management skills and the ability to deal effectively with changing priorities and conflicting demands.


• Effective teamwork in accomplishing objectives, including mentoring and motivating peers.


• Providing insight over budget, procurement, time and labor, travel, and property of assigned team members.


• Qualified Glovebox worker and Fissile Material Handler Supervisor.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Leadership: Demonstrated record of successful technical leadership and proven ability in supervising, resolving conflicts, administering discipline, mentoring, team building, managing staff requirements, motivating employees, and developing personnel spanning all career levels.

Knowledge and Expertise: Demonstrated experience in developing work scope, schedules, and coordinating work activities. Experience planning for and managing tactical execution of work; tracking and reporting progress. Experience performing work in a manufacturing environment and executing work in compliance with facility requirements, conduct of operations, conduct of engineering and conduct of maintenance standards.

Accountability: Experience working with confidential or proprietary information, classified documents or sensitive information.

Communication: Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills as evidenced by internal and external interactions (seminars, briefings, presentations, and publications); effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of personnel and customers.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or related science, and 4 years nuclear experience. Education or experience that is job related may be substituted on a case-by-case basis. The degree may fulfill 3 of the 4 years of nuclear experience on a one-for-one time basis.

DOE: Q Clearance and HRP Certification are required.

• Experience executing work in compliance with facility requirements.


• Knowledgeable of Integrated Work Management (IWM), Conduct of Operations, Inventory Management, and Quality Assurance.


• Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team of technicians, engineers, scientists, professional staff, and project leads.


• Experience with nuclear high hazard facility operating requirements, safety authorization basis and demonstrated knowledge of Conduct of Operations planning and execution.


• Experience in project management, including planning, organizing, and resource management.


• Experience with defining work unit objectives and the subsequent tracking and reporting on progress.


• Demonstrated knowledge or experience working in a manufacturing or production organization requiring implementation of defined manufacturing, testing, and quality requirements.

This position will be in Los Alamos, NM.

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). The selected applicants will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matters. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2a: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2a, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
