Job description

Job Summary

Provides language interpretation in accordance with national standards and code of ethics for interpreters in health care. Promotes equal access to services and effective communication between Grady staff and providers and the Limited English Proficient and deaf/hard of hearing patients and their families. Flexibility to cover different shifts and days required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interprets accurately and completely for Limited English Proficient persons, Grady staff, and providers.
  • Provides information to staff, providers, and patients regarding access to Language Interpretive Services.
  • Assists with the scheduling and provision of language services for Spanish, American Sign Language, and other languages.
  • Assists with training and orientation of new employees and volunteers.
  • Makes rounds on Limited English Proficient or deaf/hard or hearing patients and families to ensure patients are receiving adequate language services.
  • Advocates on behalf of patients as necessary to protect and promote patients' rights, and routinely advises supervisor of difficult cases or related problems.
  • Provides documentation for all interpretive sessions and keeps updated information in the system for monthly reports. Follows standard documentation procedures by completing documentation thoroughly, accurately, and placing it in the designated location in a timely manner (logs, encounter forms, incident reports, dispatch logs, etc.).
  • Assists translator in proofreading and editing some translations.
  • Pursues avenues to improve medical terminology, note-taking, and interpreting skills, and for professional enhancement and continuing education.
  • Performs other related duties as requested by supervisor.

Must pass Interpreter Skills Test with a minimum terminology score of 80% and a maximum of 3 significant errors. (Required standard prior to 2010 pass Interpreter Skills Test with minimum terminology score of 75% and a maximum of 3 significant errors.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School or Diploma or GED Required.
  • Experience in culturally diverse health care environment performing interpreting functions preferred.
