Job description

Northern Obstetrics & Gynecology Physician Opportunity

Northern Regional Hospital | Mount Airy, North Carolina ("Mayberry")

Northern Regional Hospital is seeking an Obstetrics & Gynecology physician to join a well-established, patient-centered women's health practice in Mount Airy, North Carolina-widely known as "Mayberry," the hometown inspiration for The Andy Griffith Show. This opportunity offers the rare combination of meaningful clinical work, modern hospital resources, and an exceptional lifestyle in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Practice & Clinical Environment

The incoming physician will join a collaborative care team that's growing into a five-provider team. The practice operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with providers averaging approximately 20 patients per day in the clinic when not on call.

The call schedule is one week every three weeks (1:3), providing predictability and work-life balance. To support safe and timely coverage, the physician must reside within 20 minutes of the hospital.

The scope of practice is comprehensive and professionally rewarding, including:

  • Full-spectrum obstetric and gynecologic care
  • Routine annual exams and preventive women's health
  • Contraceptive counseling and IUD placement/removal
  • Management of abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, urinary incontinence, and menopausal care
  • Obstetric care including fetal stress testing and 3D/4D ultrasound
  • Cesarean sections performed on the LDRP unit
  • On-site breastfeeding education and women's health classes
  • Physicians enjoy seven-day access to operating rooms, with early morning block time available multiple days per week.

Birthing Center & Surgical Services

Northern Regional Hospital's Birthing Center features private Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Post-Partum (LDRP) rooms, epidural anesthesia, a dedicated cesarean section OR suite, a Level I Nursery, and on-site ultrasound and fetal monitoring.

The hospital's modern Surgery Center includes four operating rooms supported by highly skilled staff including our dedicated team of nurses, surgical technologists, anesthesia (CRNA-only model), and central sterile teams. Surgical Services is well established and efficiently managed, creating a supportive environment for physicians to practice at a high level.

Why Live Here? Life in the Blue Ridge Foothills

Living in Mount Airy offers a lifestyle that many physicians seek but few find-small-town warmth with big-region access.

  • Fishing, kayaking, and camping in nearby state parks
  • Easy day trips to Boone, Blowing Rock, and West Jefferson
  • Golf courses, nature preserves, and mountain trails within minutes of home

Wineries, Arts & Culture

The region is part of North Carolina's growing wine country, with popular nearby destinations such as Yadkin Valley, home to numerous vineyards, tasting rooms, and weekend events. Arts and crafts thrive throughout the foothills, with galleries, local artisans, pottery studios, music venues, and seasonal craft markets.

Festivals, Community & Downtown Living

Mount Airy is known for its vibrant community life and signature events, including:

  • Mayberry Days, which draws visitors from across the country each fall
  • The Autumn Leaves Festival, celebrating music, arts, crafts, and Appalachian heritage
  • A charming, walkable historic downtown Mount Airy filled with locally owned restaurants, boutiques, breweries, museums, and live music.

Adding to the city's momentum is the upcoming Balladeer Hotel & Granstone Conference & Event Center, scheduled to open soon. This highly anticipated development will enhance lodging, dining, and conference amenities while supporting continued economic and cultural growth in the community.
