Job description

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Community Membership Manager
Northern Michigan Territory
Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore โ€ข $45,000-$50,000 โ€ข Salaried, Exempt
The Opportunity
Every girl who joins Girl Scouts gains skills, confidence, and a community that's with her for life. You're the person who finds her.
As Community Membership Manager for Northern Michigan, you'll be the face of Girl Scouts across some of the most expansive and geographically spread territory in the council. This role is for someone who is genuinely comfortable working independently, driving significant distances, and building something where there's real room to grow.
This is a field sales role with a mission. You'll own your pipeline, build your schedule around results, and be held to real growth targets. If you're energized by relationship-building and closing, and you care about what happens after the close, this role was built for you.
Your Territory
The Northern Michigan territory covers our northernmost counties, centered on Petoskey and extending through Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Alpena, Otsego, Crawford, Oscoda, Rogers City, and surrounding communities. The region has seen real growth from remote-work transplants and young professionals who are hungry for community connection and a strong volunteer pipeline. Northern Michigan College and established local organizations are key partners. This is territory for a self-starter who sees low Girl Scout density not as a limitation but as an open field.
What You'll Do
RECRUIT NEW MEMBERS
โ€ข Own a weekly cadence of at least two community recruitment events at schools, faith communities, civic organizations, and treat every event as a pipeline opportunity, not a checkbox.
โ€ข Drive prospects from first contact through membership with consistent, disciplined follow-up.
โ€ข Tell the Girl Scout story with energy and credibility to groups of every size, background, and level of familiarity with the organization.
โ€ข Build and deepen relationships with school administrators, faith leaders, and community partners who can expand your reach.
โ€ข Coordinate with council colleagues to connect new members to troop opportunities quickly and smoothly.
DEVELOP AND SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
โ€ข Attend and actively support Service Unit meetings, bringing energy and practical value.
โ€ข Partner with Service Unit teams to build and execute meaningful Plans of Work.
โ€ข Recruit and onboard volunteer leaders to fill key Service Unit roles, ensuring no gap goes unaddressed.
โ€ข Be the go-to resource for volunteers: answer questions, solve problems, resolve conflicts, and keep leaders confident in their roles.
PROTECT AND GROW RETENTION
โ€ข Track membership data with intention - spot trends, identify at-risk members, and move proactively.
โ€ข Lead renewal outreach through calls, emails, and direct follow-up well before memberships lapse.
โ€ข Support troop leaders in creating experiences that keep girls and families coming back.
โ€ข Partner with internal teams to remove structural barriers to participation.
MANAGE YOUR TERRITORY LIKE A BUSINESS
โ€ข Keep clean, current records of all recruitment activity, contacts, and outcomes in council systems.
โ€ข Own your membership metrics: new girl registrations, total membership, and retention rates.
โ€ข Participate in Membership Kick-Off and annual Service Unit planning cycles with full preparation and follow-through.
โ€ข Respond promptly to inquiries, new registrations, and lapsed member outreach - urgency matters.
What You Bring
โ€ข A documented track record of hitting goals in sales, recruitment, fundraising, or account management. We want to see results, not just effort.
โ€ข The social confidence to walk into any room cold, build rapport fast, and leave with a commitment.
โ€ข Strong presentation skills and the discipline to manage your own schedule, priorities, and outcomes without daily direction.
โ€ข Genuine comfort working across diverse communities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
โ€ข A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of lived and professional experience.
โ€ข Experience with youth organizations, volunteer management, or STEM programming is a plus.
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success isn't ambiguous. You'll know you're winning when:
โ€ข New girl membership is growing consistently in your territory, not just in strong months.
โ€ข Retention rates are trending up because girls and families are engaged, not just enrolled.
โ€ข Your Service Units are fully staffed with confident, supported volunteer leaders.
โ€ข Your pipeline is active, your follow-up is disciplined, and your recruitment calendar is full.
โ€ข Council leaders see your territory as a model for how this role is done.
Practical Details
Salary: $45,000 to $50,000 โ€ข Salaried, Exempt
โ€ข Location: Home-based within the territory (Northern Michigan preferred). Significant driving throughout the region is a regular expectation of this role.
โ€ข Regular evenings and occasional weekends are part of the role. That's not an exception; it's the job.
โ€ข Reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license are required.
โ€ข Background screening required (cost covered by council).
โ€ข Membership in Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) is required upon hire, per the bylaws of the national organization.
Why GSMISTS
We serve approximately 6,000 girls across 30 counties in West and Northern Michigan. Our flagship Girl Scout DreamLab in Grand Rapids is a 7,300-square-foot hands-on STEM and leadership hub - a genuine story asset when you're recruiting.
