for the Blind & Disabled

Senior Blind Services Program

Driver/Assistant

The Independent Living division of The League is seeking a dedicated individual to work part-time as the Driver/Assistant for Senior Blind Services Program staff.  The efforts of this candidate should result in the ability of the program staff to serve consumers, maximizing their independence, community integration, and self-sufficiency. This individual will primarily be responsible for transporting staff in their personal vehicle to locations throughout North Central Indiana (Elkhart, Marshall, Kosciusko, St. Joe and LaPorte counties). The ideal candidate should have a strong work ethic and be motivated to serve our consumers.

Essential Duties/Skills/Responsibilities/Qualifications

         Ensure that Rehabilitation Teacher arrives at appointments safely and on time by developing transportation route plans. Appointments include individual consumer visits, support group, senior fairs and other requirements as needed.

         Assist program staff with consumer visits, including demonstration of independent living aids.

         Ensure that assistive devices be delivered to or picked up from consumers as needed.

         Act as sighted guide for program staff and consumers as needed.  Training will be provided and candidate must be willing to learn this skill.

         Assist Rehabilitation Teacher in filling out forms and applications.

         Assist the Rehabilitation Teacher in reaching the goals assigned to the program, including some assistance in program documentation.

         Provide information and referral services.

         Provide office support as needed.

         Assist with senior fairs and presentations.

         Ability to independently operate or learn to operate the League's computer network and software in order to track community activities, information and referral services, record accurate mileage usage, and any other required electronic reporting.

         High School diploma or equivalent (GED) required and related experience preferred.    

         Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

         Must possess a valid driver's license, pass background and driving record checks and provide proof of insurance and be willing to travel frequently throughout the service area.
