The Opportunity

Greenwich House Music School provides dynamic arts education to public schools in downtown Manhattan. We are looking to bring on two (2) teaching artists to work in after-school settings throughout the 2026-27 school year in one to three schools. We are seeking teaching artists with a variety of performing arts experience (a big toolbox!) to lead after-school classes in public school settings, with different ages and educational goals. Musical theatre, theatre, improve, dance/movement, and music/songwriting are all potential classes we would like to offer our students.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about people and wants to be part of a mission-driven organization making a lasting impact in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Create an inclusive and safe space in a class of 8-20 students. An afterschool staff member will be present to assist.
  • Design and implement lesson plans and be able to adjust and adapt as needed to meet students where they are at.
  • Attend meetings with Theater Coordinator, give and receive feedback on program.
  • Exude a positive attitude, share ideas for innovation and collaboration and be open to ideas from school and/or Theater Coordinator.
  • Keep Theater Coordinator informed of progress and problems
  • Prepare a short performance with students to share at the end of the term (as appropriate).
  • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned by Theater Coordinator.
  • Manage planned or unplanned absences in a manner that helps Greenwich House ensure programming coverage to meet the students’ needs.
  • The successful candidate interacts with all levels of personnel, customers and clients of Greenwich House and maintains cordial business relationships with the agency’s other programs.
  • Before working in a school setting, the candidate will complete paperwork needed for a criminal background check and attend a fingerprinting appointment to verify there is no history of child abuse or maltreatment.

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree in performing arts or applied theater or three years of experience teaching performing arts to school aged children.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and implementing lesson plans using a participant centered approach.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Professional integrity and a strong sense of moral and ethical standards.
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus.

A standout candidate would feel confident leading a class of theater games or music and dance for younger students as well as teaching improv or musical theatre to older students. They would be able to lead a class that balances structure and creative choice, with tangible learning goals while also allowing students to have fun with each other as they play out their ideas.
