What is a non union petite model?

A Non Union Petite Model is a fashion or commercial model who does not belong to a modeling union, such as SAG-AFTRA, and specializes in modeling clothing and products for clients seeking models with smaller-than-average stature, typically under 5'7" for women. Non union means the model is not bound by union rules or contracts, giving them flexibility to work with a wider range of clients and agencies. Petite models are often booked for print ads, catalogs, online retailers, and sometimes runway shows that cater to more diverse body types. Being non union can also mean that the model negotiates their own rates and terms, rather than following union minimums.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a non union petite model?

To thrive as a Non Union Petite Model, you need a strong sense of body awareness, posing techniques, and knowledge of industry standards, with height generally under 5'7" and a well-maintained appearance. Familiarity with portfolio-building tools, casting platforms, and photo shoot environments is essential. Confidence, professionalism, and the ability to take direction make someone stand out in this highly competitive field. These skills are crucial for securing bookings, building a reputable brand, and adapting to the diverse needs of clients and photographers.

What are some common challenges faced by non union petite models in securing consistent work?

Non-union petite models often encounter challenges such as limited representation by major agencies and fewer casting calls compared to standard-size models. This means they need to be proactive in self-marketing, networking, and finding freelance opportunities. Building a strong portfolio, maintaining an active presence on social media, and directly reaching out to brands or smaller agencies can help overcome these obstacles. Additionally, petite models may need to be flexible with the types of modeling jobs they pursue, such as commercial, catalog, or niche markets, to increase their chances of steady work.
